Stonehill Shuts Down Humber in Second Half, 65-49

Skyhawks hold Canadian guests to 12 second-half points on 17-percent shooting 

EASTON, Mass. (December 20, 2014) – Stonehill College closed out its first semester schedule with a 65-49 victory over Humber College from Toronto, Ontario, in non-conference men's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

Stonehill held Humber to just 12 second half points on 17.4-percent shooting (4-for-23), including 0-for-6 from three-point range, after the Hawks shot 53.8% (14-26) in the opening half (5-10 from beyond the arc), to hold a two point halftime lead (37-35). Stonehill shot 37.3-percent (25-for-67) from the floor, including 41.9% (13-31) over the final 20 minutes to pull away, converting 7-of-10 free-throws and shooting 8-for-27 (29.6%) from long distance. The Skyhawks turned the ball over just ten times, compared to 26 for their guests, and rolled to a 31-5 advantage in points off turnovers, including 19-0 in the first half to stay close. Humber held a 41-36 rebounding edge, but Stonehill outscored the Hawks 13-8 on second chance points. Humber finished shooting 36.7% (18-49) overall.

Sophomore forward Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led a balanced Stonehill effort with 12 points (eight first half), two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Junior guard Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, while senior forward Jack Cole (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) fell just a point shy of his fourth straight double-double, scoring seven of his nine points in the second half on 4-of-8 shooting with a game-high 12 rebounds (eight offensive), three assists and two steals. Junior Stuart McEwen (Sydney, Australia) chipped in with a season-high nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range.

Fifth-year forward Chad Bewley (Newmarket, Ontario) scored 14 of his game-high 17 points off the bench in the first half, making all four of his shots from three-point range and converting a pair of free-throws over the opening 20 minutes, to go with a team-high eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. He finished shooting 5-for-8 overall, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-3 at the line. Junior Tyrone Dickson (Scarborough, Ontario) added 11 points (nine first half) on 5-of-8 shooting, including 1-for-1 from three, and four rebounds. The rest of the Hawks were just a combined 8-for-33 (24.2%) from the field, including 0-for-9 from deep.

Stonehill held Humber without a field goal over the first nine and a half minutes of the second half to key a 17-2 run that turned its two point (37-35) halftime deficit into a 13 point lead (52-39) after a McEwen three-pointer with 11:50 remaining. Cole scored five of his seven second half points during that stretch, including a three-point play which put the Skyhawks in front for good 2:39 into the half.

Bewley ended the Humber drought with a layup with 10:25 to play that sparked a 6-0 spurt to pull the Hawks back within seven (52-45) following a layup from sophomore Junior Davis (Scarborough, Ontario) with 9:26 remaining. Stonehill put the game out of reach with a 10-1 run that extended its lead to a game-high 18 (65-47) after a Smith layup with 4:24 left. Smith had four points during that stretch, while Logan and sophomore Jimmy Walsh (Manasquan, New York/Manasquan) both added baskets. Dickson capped the scoring for both teams with a Humber jumper with 2:07 remaining as neither team scored the rest of the way.

Humber took a pair of six point leads in the opening nine minutes of the contest, the latter of which (18-12) was capped by a Brayden Gohn (Holland Landing, Ontario) dunk with 11:44 remaining in the half. Stonehill pulled even (18-18) on a McEwen triple with 10:36 on the clock and then Humber reeled off ten straight points to take its first double-figure lead (32-22) with 4:41 to go in the half after back to back threes by Bewley.

Stonehill scored nine straight points to take the lead (35-34) after a layup from junior Daniel Brix (Monroe Township, New Jersey/St. Joseph) with 34-seconds remaining in the half. Bewley sent the Hawks into halftime with the lead (37-35) by canning a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Stonehill (6-4, 3-2 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday, December 31, for a New Year's Eve non-conference matchup at Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks are home again following the New Year when they return to Northeast-10 Conference action to host Saint Michael's College on Saturday, January 3, at 3:30 p.m. Humber (8-3) faces George Brown on Monday, December 29.
