Cumpstone and Logan double-doubles lead Skyhawks to first road win 

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 1, 2014) – Stonehill College's near misses over the last week were rewarded with a 75-73 triumph over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this afternoon.

Sophomore Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio/Kenston) and freshman Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) both notched double-doubles to lead Stonehill to its first road win of the season. Cumpstone posted a team-high 18 points to go with a game-best 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, shooting 8-of-14 from the field and converting both free-throw attempts to go with four blocked shots in 29 minutes off the bench. Logan added 11 points and ten boards for his second collegiate double-double, while sophomore Adam Bramanti (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional) contributed 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, with three rebounds and two assists.

Sophomore Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) registered eight points, connecting on 2-of-3 three-pointers, with four assists and three steals. Junior Jack Cole (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) chipped in nine boards and seven points.

Saint Rose got a pair of double-double performances as well, led by sophomore Tyler Sayre's (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) game-high 27 points to go with ten rebounds, shooting 7-for-14 from the field and converting 12-of-14 free-throws. Senior Dominykas Milka (Ridgewood, N.Y./Christ the King) added 13 points, ten rebounds, eight assists, two steals and a blocked shot for the Golden Knights, while classmate Kareem Thomas (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) contributed 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. The rest of the Saint Rose squad made just 4-of-20 (20%) shots on the night for 12 points.

Stonehill shot 42.9-percent (30-for-70) from the field for the contest, including 46.2% (18-39) in the second half, and also drained 10-of-24 (41.7%) three-pointers. The Skyhawks posted a 48-35 rebounding advantage to help produce a 17-9 edge in second chance points and saw their bench outscore the Saint Rose reserves 26-3. The Golden Knights were held to 37.5% (24-64) shooting overall, connecting on 12-of-32 shots from the field in each half, but were slightly better from three-point range by hitting 9-of-19 (47.4%), including 5-of-9 (55.6%) in the opening half. Saint Rose also converted 16-of-20 (80%) free-throws and outscored the Skyhawks 14-4 in points off turnovers.

Saint Rose staked out a ten point (13-3) lead after five minutes with an 11-0 run, sparked by seven points from Thomas. The Golden Knights pushed the lead to 12 (19-7) after a jumper from Milka with 11:14 to go in the half, and their lead was ten (21-11) after two Sayre free-throws with 9:53 on the clock.

Three-pointers from sophomore Josh Heyliger (Queens, N.Y./The Hill School) and freshman Jimmy Walsh (Manasquan, N.Y./Manasquan) keyed eight straight points to pull Stonehill back within a pair (21-19) 6:41 before halftime. The Skyhawks drew even (30-30) after a Heyliger layup with 2:41 left, but Saint Rose was able to take a three-point (35-32) halftime lead thanks to a key triple from Thomas down the stretch.

Thomas opened the second half with a three-pointer to extend the Saint Rose lead to six (38-32) after 42-seconds. Following a Sayre three on the Golden Knights next possession, Stonehill used a nine point spurt to take the lead (44-41) with 16:39 to play after two straight buckets by Cole. Saint Rose drew even (46-46) and regained the lead (49-48) after a three-pointer by freshman Isaiah Cosbert (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) with 14:54 on the clock.

Stonehill reeled off the next ten points to open a nine point advantage (58-49) after a Logan three with 12:13 to play. The Skyhawks extended the lead to ten (67-57) with a Smith jumper with 7:42 remaining, but Saint Rose wouldn't go quietly. Senior Dan Mundweiler's (Kansas City, Kan./Olathe East) three-pointer drew the Golden Knights back within three (67-64) with 5:20 still to play, and then after Bramanti initially answered with a triple at the other end, the hosts pulled within one (70-69) after a three point play by Sayre with 3:40 to go.

Logan regained Stonehill's three point cushion with a jumper at the other end and the Skyhawks wouldn't relinquish the lead thanks to a clutch jumper by Cumpstone, while Cole made 1-of-2 free-throws in the final 1:10. Saint Rose missed its last five shots from the field after the Sayre three point play with 3:40 remaining to stall its comeback, converting just 2-of-4 free-throws in the closing minute as well.

Stonehill (6-13, 3-11 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday night when it visits Merrimack College for a Northeast-10 matchup at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, February 8, to host Saint Michael's College at 3:30 p.m. Saint Rose (10-10, 7-7 NE-10) visits American International College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
