Jon Cronin, '92, was inducted to the New England Basketball and Northeast-10 Conference Halls of Fame over the past year.

Reunion held in conjunction with Saturday's NE-10 men's basketball matchup with New Haven 

EASTON, Mass. (January 23, 2014) – Stonehill College will honors its past this Saturday with ceremonies surrounding its Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball matchup with the University of New Haven in Merkert Gymnasium at 3:30 p.m. The game also marks the men's basketball team's Purple & White Game.

Stonehill will welcome back its 1988-89 men's basketball team that captured the program's third Northeast-10 Tournament championship and will honor a key member of that team as Jon Cronin, Class of 1992, will be formally inducted into the NE-10 Hall of Fame. This weekend is also Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend, sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Stonehill head coach Chris Kraus and his staff will be wearing sneakers with their suits during Saturday's game.

Cronin, who was announced as a member of the Northeast-10 Hall of Fame at the Conference's summer meetings in June, will be formally recognized along with the 1988-89 men's basketball team of which he was a part as a freshman. Cronin, a member of the Stonehill Athletics Hall of Fame (Class of 1999), was a three-time All-Northeast-10 performer over his career, earning first team honors as a junior and senior. He was named the NE-10 Player of the Year as a senior after being named the NE-10 and ECAC Rookie of the Year his freshman season when he scored a program rookie record 627 points. Cronin was also inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame last spring along with his brother, Brian Cronin, '89.

Jon Cronin still ranks second in program history with his 2,301 career points, while his 308 career three-pointers remain the program record. He helped lead Stonehill to the 1989 NE-10 Tournament title and NCAA Division II Tournament bid. Cronin led the NE-10 in rebounding as a junior with 10.3 per game and three-point field goal percentage (.454) as a senior. His career point total is third-highest in NE-10 history, while his program-record 1,044 rebounds rank fourth, his 733 career field goals eighth, his program-record 308 three-pointers seventh and his program-best .438 three-point field goal percentage third all-time in Conference history.

Cronin is the eighth representative from Stonehill inducted into the NE-10 Hall of Fame and just the second men's basketball student-athlete, joining Bob Reitz, '83. Cronin also joins Tom Folliard (founding father of the NE-10), Michelle Doonan (women's basketball), Paula Sullivan (women's basketball coach), Mary Naughton (women's basketball), Katie Lambert (women's lacrosse) and Nancy Smith (women's basketball/soccer/softball).

Stonehill will also welcome back to campus on Saturday the 1988-89 NE-10 Tournament Championship team.

The 1988-89 Stonehill men's basketball team posted a 23-9 record overall, including a 13-5 clip in the NE-10 to finish second in the NE-10 standings. Stonehill opened the NE-10 Tournament with a 106-86 victory over seventh-seeded Springfield College in the quarterfinals before topping third-seeded Merrimack College in the semifinals, 91-79. Stonehill then captured the program's third NE-10 tournament title with a 116-111 triumph over top-seeded and archrival Bentley University in the championship game. The 116 points remain an NE-10 Tournament record.

The NE-10 championship was the program's fifth overall to go with regular season and tournament crowns in the first two years of the Conference's existence in 1980-81 and 1981-82. In addition to Jon Cronin's NE-10 Rookie of the Year award, his older brother, Brian Cronin, '89, earned first team All-NE-10 honors. Current Stonehill baseball head coach Pat Boen, '89 was a senior on that team and dished out 228 assists that season, a total which still ranks eighth in NE-10 history.

The 1988-89 team will be introduced at halftime of Saturday's men's basketball game, with Cronin also being presented with his NE-10 Hall of Fame award. There will be a reception for the team, Cronin, and his teammates from all four of his seasons following the game.

The 2014 Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend will be held January 24 to January 27. Suits and Sneakers is a national Coaches vs. Cancer event that is designed to raise awareness about the fight against cancer and the American Cancer Society by encouraging member coaches and their coaching staffs to wear sneakers with their suits at games held that weekend to show support for the Coaches vs. Cancer program. By wearing sneakers, participating coaches help raise awareness about cancer and the importance that nutrition and physical activity play in reducing one's risk of the disease. Additionally, this weekend helps promote the American Cancer Society as a place for people facing cancer to turn for free information, day-to-day help, and emotional support.
