Adelphi Stops Stonehill, 68-57

Libroia nets 22 points to lead Panthers to NE-10 win 

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (January 8, 2014) – Adelphi University shot 55-percent from the field in posting a 68-57 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at the Center for Recreation and Sports tonight.

Sophomore Anthony Libroia (Bayside, N.Y./Holy Cross) led Adelphi with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range, to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior Duane Morgan (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) added 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor while converting 8-of-9 free-throws to go with seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Junior Boris Fodouop (Harare, Zimbabwe) contributed a double-double with 13 points and a game-high ten rebounds.

Junior Jack Cole (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) led Stonehill with 16 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field while converting all six free-throw attempts to go with six rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. Sophomore Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) added 13 points, connecting on 3-of-6 three-pointers, with three rebounds, three assists and a steal, while freshman Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) chipped in 13 points and four boards.

Adelphi shot 55-percent (22-for-40) from the field, including 66.7% (12-18) in the second half, while converting 74.1% (20-27) of its free-throws. Stonehill was limited to 33.3-percent (21-for-63) shooting on the night, including 5-for-23 (21.7%) from three-point range, while converting 10-of-13 (76.9%) free-throw attempts. The Skyhawks also held a 33-31 rebounding edge, posting a 12-6 advantage for second chance points.

Aside from Smith opening the game with a three-pointer and three ties along the way, Adelphi led virtually start to finish. The Panthers held a four point halftime lead (28-24) as the Skyhawks shot just 31-percent (9-29) from the field over the opening 20 minutes. Cole opened the second half with back to back baskets to pull Stonehill even (28-28) a minute in, and then sophomore Josh Heyliger (Queens, N.Y./The Hill School) pulled the Skyhawks even again (36-36) with a layup off his own miss with 15:11 remaining.

Adelphi followed with ten straight points over the next two and a half minutes to open a ten point cushion (46-36) after a layup from Greg Davis (Piscataway, N.J./South Kent Prep) with 12:35 remaining. Libroia sparked the run with a pair of three-pointers and eight points in all. The Panthers stretched the lead to 11 (51-40) with 8:40 to play after Libroia split two free-throw attempts and then extended the advantage to 14 (56-42) on a pair of Morgan free-throws with 4:30 on the clock.

Adelphi pushed the lead to a game-high 15 (60-45) on a basket by sophomore Ryan DeNicola (Massapequa, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) with 2:50 to go. Stonehill pulled within ten points on two occasions over the next minute, but could get no closer.

Stonehill (3-9, 1-7 NE-10) returns to Merkert Gymnasium for the first time in over a month on Saturday when it hosts Pace University at 3:30 p.m. Adelphi (4-9, 2-5 NE-10) visits Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
