22 Skyhawk turnovers lead to 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers for Penmen
EASTON, Mass. (December 7, 2013) – Southern New Hampshire University took advantage of 22 Stonehill College turnovers to claim a 67-55 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.
Sophomore Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J./Saint Thomas More) led the way for Southern New Hampshire with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, to go with eight rebounds and two steals. Senior Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H./Manchester Central) added 18 points, aided by 3-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Aleksandar Dobrovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Penmen with 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Junior co-captain Jack Cole (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) led Stonehill with his second double-double of the season (12th career) as he posted 11 points and a season and game-high 15 rebounds as he made 3-of-6 shots from the field and converted all five free-throw attempts. Freshman Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led the Skyhawks with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and seven boards. Sophomore Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio/Kenston) chipped in nine points, nine boards and two blocked shots.

Southern New Hampshire turned Stonehill's season-high 22 turnovers, including 14 in the first half, into a 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers. The Penmen shot 40-percent (24-for-60) from the field, including 48% (12-25) in the second half. SNHU connected on 4-of-9 three-pointers in the second half to finish at 9-for-24 (37.5%) for the afternoon. Stonehill was limited to 38% (19-50) shooting, including 2-for-16 (12.5%) from beyond the arc, while connecting on 78.9% (15-19) of its free-throws. The Skyhawks posted a 47-28 rebounding advantage, but held just an 8-2 edge in second chance points.
Stonehill scored the first six points of the contest and led by eight (20-12) after two free-throws from sophomore Adam Bramanti (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional) with 7:23 to play in the first half. Southern New Hampshire reeled off 13 straight points to take the lead and extend it to five points (25-20) after a three-pointer from junior Max Taylor (Shokan, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) with 2:56 to play in the half. The Skyhawks closed back within two after a three point play by Cole, but the Penmen pushed their lead to seven (32-25) at the half thanks to a three-pointer at the buzzer from Stys.
Southern New Hampshire extended its lead to ten (37-27) with a Sanders three just over three minutes into the second half and was up 11 (45-34) after a Dobrovic layup with 12:56 to play. Stonehill pulled back within four (48-44) after a tip-in by Logan with 9:25 remaining, but that would be as close as it would get the rest of the way. Junior Phillip Tripodakis (Athens, Greece) canned a three at the other end to spark a 14-4 Penmen game-clinching run that pushed the lead to 14 (62-48) after a Stys three with three minutes to go.
Stonehill (3-5, 1-4 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday night when it visits Saint Anselm College for a Northeast-10 matchup at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks don't return to Merkert Gym for over a month when they host Pace University on Saturday, January 11, at 3:30 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (4-4, 2-4 NE-10) visits Assumption College on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
