Stonehill Shoots Past Adelphi, 74-54

62.5-percent shooting, season-high 21 points from Fazzini spurs Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (January 29, 2013) – Stonehill College shot 62.5-percent from the field to run away with a 74-54 victory over Adelphi University in a key Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball matchup at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Senior Adam Fazzini (Drums, Pa./Crestwood) led the charge for Stonehill with a season-high 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field, draining both three-point attempts, to go with a team-high five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Sophomore Jack Cole (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) added 13 points on 6-for-6 shooting and four rebounds, while senior Sam Markle (Branford, Conn./Saint Thomas More) posted eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, five assists, two boards and two steals.

Stonehill shot a season-high 62.5-percent (30-for-48) from the field, including 65.4% (17-26) in the first half to build a 16 point (39-23) lead by halftime, and connected on 8-of-13 (61.5%) three-pointers. The Skyhawks held a 34-29 rebounding edge and the bench outscored the Adelphi reserves 20-7 on the night. Adelphi was limited to 34.5-percent (20-for-58) shooting, including 6-for-16 (37.5%) from beyond the arc.

Senior John Calarco (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) led Adelphi with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 2-for-3 from three-point range, and converting both free-throw attempts to go with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Classmate Cliff Brown (Hempstead, N.Y./Uniondale) posted ten points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field and converting both free-throws to go with two steals, while freshman Anthony Libroia (Bayside, N.Y./Holy Cross) contributed nine points, three assists and two steals.

Stonehill led start to finish, staking out a six point (15-9) lead after a Fazzini jumper six and a half minutes into the game. The Skyhawks were up four (22-18) with 7:37 remaining in the half and then outscored Adelphi 17-5 over the remainder of the half to take a 16 point (39-23) halftime lead. Senior Brian Hamor (Schenectady, N.Y./Bishop Gibbons) pushed the Stonehill lead to double figures with a three-pointer with 2:54 left in the half. A three-ball from Fazzini extended the lead to 13 (36-23) with 44-seconds to play and then freshman Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) drilled a three at the buzzer.

Adelphi climbed back within nine (44-35) after a Calarco three-pointer three minutes into the second half, but Stonehill responded with a 14-2 run to open a 21 point lead (58-37) after a three-pointer by freshman Pierce Cumpstone (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) with 11:10 to play. The Skyhawks extended the lead to 23 (63-40) with a three-point play by Cole with 8:18 remaining and the hosts weren't seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Stonehill (9-9, 5-9 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it visits Pace University in another key NE-10 clash at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, February 9, to host Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m. Adelphi (10-10, 7-7 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
