Tongo Named NE-10 Player of the Week - Stonehill

Acton, Mass., native collects weekly award for first time

EASTON, Mass. (January 30, 2011) – Stonehill College senior guard Andre Tongo (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week for men's basketball by the league office this afternoon.

Tongo, who earns the first weekly award of his career, led Stonehill to a pair of wins and into a share of first place in the Northeast-10 standings as the Skyhawks have now won four straight and six of their last seven. He averaged 22 points on 61-percent (14-for-23) shooting from the field, including 9-of-10 (90%) from three-point range, while converting 7-of-9 (77.8%) free-throws for the week. Tongo also contributed 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocked shots and a steal in 33 minutes per game.

Tongo scored a career-high 23 points as he made 8-of-15 shots from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range, while converting 2-of-3 free-throws to go with eight rebounds (four offensive) and a blocked shot in Saturday's 73-68 victory over Pace University. He opened the week with 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, converting 5-of-6 free-throws with three rebounds, two blocks and a steal in Wednesday's big 55-54 win at NE-10 co-leaders Adelphi University.

Tongo has started all 19 games in his senior season and leads Stonehill in scoring with 13.3 points (17^th NE-10) in 30.8 minutes per game as he is shooting 40.9-percent (85-for-208) from the field, including 40.7% (46-113) from three-point land (12^th), while converting 73.5% (36-49) of his free-throws. He is also contributing 4.9 rebounds, a team-best 1.4 steals, 1.1 assists and 2.4 three-point field goals (9^th) per game. Tongo has started all 14 NE-10 games this season and is averaging 12.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals in conference play.

Tongo has started 19 of the 84 games he has played over his career at Stonehill and has totaled 437 points as a career 39.4-percent (153-388) shooter overall, including 35% (71-203) from beyond the arc, while adding 173 rebounds, 50 assists, 64 steals and 25 blocked shots. He has five 20 point outings this season, leading the Skyhawks in scoring 11 times this season, including four of the last five games, posting his first career double-double with 22 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in a double-overtime setback to rival Bentley University on December 10.

Stonehill (14-5, 10-4 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow night when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for a key Northeast-10 clash in Merkert Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks close out the week at Merrimack College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
