Kernan Named NE-10 Player of the Week - Stonehill

Medford, N.J., native leads Skyhawks as win streak reaches eight games

EASTON, Mass. (January 17, 2011) – Stonehill College senior forward Mike Kernan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week for men's basketball by the league office this afternoon.

Kernan, who earns the weekly honor for the first time, averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, an assist, blocked shot and steal in a 2-0 week as Stonehill extended its NE-10 best winning streak to eight games. He made 64.3-percent (18-for-28) of his shots from the field for the week. Kernan opened the week with his fourth double-double of the season (13^th career) in Wednesday's 78-63 victory over Assumption College as he scored a career-high 21 points, shooting 9-for-14 from the field and converting 3-of-5 free throw attempts, to go with ten rebounds, two blocks and two steals. He rounded out the week with a game-high 19 points, again making 9-of-14 shots from the field, eight rebounds and two assists in Sunday's 78-57 victory at the University of New Haven.

Kernan has started all 16 games for Stonehill this season and shares the team lead with 12.6 points per game, shooting 50-percent (85-for-170) from the field, to go with a team-best 9.6 rebounds (3^rd NE-10), ranking second in the NE-10 with 7.1 defensive boards per game, 1.3 assists and 1.1 blocks (8^th) in 30.6 minutes per game. He has led the Skyhawks in scoring four times this season and in rebounding ten times. In 11 NE-10 games, he is averaging a double-double with a team-best 13.5 points and 10.1 rebounds (3^rd) to go with 16 assists, 14 blocks (6^th) and 13 steals.

Kernan has started 71 of the 106 games he has played over his career at Stonehill and looks to become the 35^th player in program history to net 1,000 points over his career down the stretch this season. He has totaled 883 points, 737 rebounds, 70 blocked shots, 106 assists and 62 steals.

Stonehill (13-3, 8-3 NE-10), in a three-way tie for second place in the Conference standings, is back in action on Wednesday night when it visits American International College, one of those teams the Skyhawks are tied with, for a key league matchup at 7:30 p.m. Stonehill rounds out the week by returning home to host Adelphi University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
