First quarter goal stands as fifth-seeded Greyhounds advance to semifinals

EASTON, Mass. (November 5, 2019) – Fifth-seeded Assumption College, ranked No. 9 in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, rode a first quarter goal off a rebound to a 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded Stonehill College in quarterfinal round action of the 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Tournament on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.
Assumption (16-3, 11-3 NE10) advances to Friday's NE10 semifinals, where it will face the winner of tonight's quarterfinal matchup between 8th-seeded Franklin Pierce University (8-10, 7-7 NE10) and top-seeded and No. 4-ranked Saint Anselm College (16-2, 13-1 NE10) being played in Manchester, New Hampshire, at 6 p.m. Stonehill, ranked No. 5 in last week's NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, likely sees its season come to a close with an 11-6 record overall, including 11-3 in the NE10. All six of the Skyhawks setbacks on the year came to nationally ranked opposition with an average score margin of -1.00.

Junior Deirdre Burchill's first quarter goal stood for Assumption as the Greyhounds locked down Stonehill on the defensive end, limiting the Skyhawks to six shots and just one on target as sophomore Kyle Gargiulo made just the one save to preserve her 11th shutout of the season.
Junior Katie Lammando played well in goal for Stonehill, finishing with six saves. Freshman Andrea Caradonna chipped in with a defensive save for the Skyhawks.
Burchill's NE10 leading 15th goal of the season was the difference as she pounced on a rebound after Lammando stopped the initial attempt from sophomore Jenna Graf and lifted a shot into the left side of the cage with 3:25 remaining in the first quarter. Caradonna cleared a bid from junior Shannon Quinlan just two minutes later to keep the deficit at one.
Lammando logged three saves in the third quarter to keep Stonehill within striking distance heading into the final quarter. The Skyhawks best scoring chance came after a corner in the fourth as Gargiulo got her pads to a shot by sophomore Emma Mawn and classmate Sophie Schreck had her rebound attempt blocked. That forced a second Stonehill corner and sophomore Elisha Brinkman fired a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked out in front by an Assumption defender.
