Schreck leads balanced offensive effort with two goals

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2019) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 8 in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, picked up its first win of the season to open Northeast-10 Conference play with a 5-1 decision over Southern Connecticut State University on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium today.

Sophomore Sophie Schreck paced a balanced Stonehill offensive effort with two goals as four Skyhawks in all found the back of the cage to hand first-year head coach Annie Hansbury her first career win. Sophomores Emma Mawn and Elisha Brinkman, along with freshman Madi Weber also potted goals for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill goalkeeping was largely untested in the matchup, with the Skyhawks recording a 29-2 advantage for shots. Junior Katie Lammando yielded just the one goal over the opening 45 minutes, before sophomore Abigail Campbell made one save in the final 15.

Senior Brianna Craft registered 11 saves in 42:56 in goal for Southern Connecticut State, including six while conceding just one goal in the first quarter alone. Freshman Janelle Ward made five stops in the final 17:04. Sophomore Ellie Craft netted the Owls lone goal.

Brianna Craft kept Stonehill off the scoreboard until the final minute of the opening quarter, before Schreck fired in a low angle shot from the right side for her first goal of the season with 25-seconds remaining. Mawn gave the Skyhawks a two-goal lead with less than four minutes remaining in the half, flipping a rebound at the near post over the Southern goalkeeper for her first goal of the season, and matching her total from her freshman season.

Schreck extended Stonehill's lead 1:35 into the second half taking the ball from the center to the right side of the scoring area and driving a shot into the left side for her second of the game. Her two goals today match her entire season total from her freshman season. Brinkman connected with senior Michaela Antonellis for the Skyhawks fourth marker, following her own corner pass to the near post, where she redirected an Antonellis drive into the cage midway through the third quarter for her first career goal.

Southern broke up the shutout on its first shot of the afternoon when Ellie Craft knocked in a loose ball in front of the cage with 51-seconds left in the third. Stonehill rounded out the scoring as Weber potted her first collegiate goal with 5:01 remaining with a one-time at the far post off a cross from classmate Mackenzie Quiqley.          

Stonehill (1-2, 1-0 NE10) is right back in action here at W.B. Mason Stadium on Tuesday, when they host Assumption College for its Faculty Appreciation Game at 4 p.m. Southern Connecticut State (0-4, 0-1 NE10) visits American International College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
