Two third period goals lift Golden Rams to season-opening win

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (September 6, 2019) – West Chester (Pa.) University, ranked No. 2 in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, rode two third period goals to a season-opening 3-1 victory over No. 8 Stonehill College in non-conference field hockey action on Vonnie Gros Field tonight.

Freshman Claire Nielsen made four saves and senior Katie Thompson dished out two assists to lead West Chester to the win. Three different players scored goals for the Golden Rams who rode two third quarter markers to the win. Seniors Caitlin Kelly and Kat Roncoroni, along with junior Caitie McNamara all netted goals for the Rams.

Junior Katie Lammando made her first career start in goal for Stonehill and finished with a career-high nine saves, while sophomore Olivia Cameron scored the Skyhawks lone goal.

Cameron's tenth career goal with 4:15 remaining in the first half for Stonehill, answered Kelly's first quarter opener, assisted by Thompson, while Lammando made six of her stops in the opening half. McNamara's goal broke the deadlock for West Chester 6:08 into the third quarter and then Thompson set up Roncoroni's insurance goal six minutes later. Nelson preserved the win from there, making the only save of the fourth quarter in the West Chester cage.

Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 NE10) is back in action on Sunday, when it visits No. 3 East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks home opener is next Saturday, September 14, when they host Southern Connecticut State University for their Northeast-10 Conference opener at 11 a.m. West Chester (1-0, 0-0 PSAC) hosts Bloomsburg (Pa.) University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
