Smith sends Skyhawks into postseason with seven point game

EASTON, Mass. (November 10, 2018) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 9 in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, closed out the regular season with a 5-0 victory over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Stonehill (12-6, 8-5 NE10), ranked No. 4 in this week's NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, has earned the No. 6 seed for next week's NE10 Tournament and will visit third-seeded LIU Post in an NE10 Quarterfinal on Tuesday at 1 p.m. The NE10 Tournament will continue with semifinal round play on Friday, November 16, with the Championship next Sunday, November 18. Saint Michael's finishes its season with a 3-14 record overall, including 3-10 in the NE10.

Senior All-American Kacie Smith, the reigning Longstreth/NFHCA Division II Player of the Year, totaled seven points in her final home game, netting three goals and adding an assist. The Skyhawks also got goals from junior Samantha Day and freshman Olivia Cameron.

Senior Sara Freedman posted one save in the Skyhawks goal to record her third shutout of the season (17th career). Junior Anna Hurley finished with 12 saves for Saint Michael's.

Cameron opened the scoring just 2:42 into the contest when she knocked in a rebound on the right side for her ninth goal of the season. Smith would have a hand in each of the Skyhawks remaining four goals, netting a pair to give the hosts a 3-0 halftime lead. She scored her first goal of the afternoon with a drive from the upper right corner of the scoring area off a corner pass from senior Carly Andersen at 20:59. Smith added her second with 4:24 remaining in the half off a pass from senior Bonnie Woods.

Day scored her first goal of the season with 10:32 to play in the contest, one-timing a crossing pass from the right side by Smith from seven yards out on the center of the area. Smith finished off her fifth hat trick of the season (20th career) with 6:12 to play when she broke in on a counter attack, with the keeper charging off her line, moved to the left, and flipped her NCAA Division II leading 29th goal of the season into the cage to round out the scoring.
