Smith leads Skyhawks with eight points, Antonellis nets a pair

EASTON, Mass. (September 15, 2018) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 2 in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, coasted to a 9-0 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas College in non-conference field hockey action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Senior All-American Kacie Smith, the reigning Longstreth/NFHCA Division II Player of the Year, led the Stonehill outburst with four goals and an assist, while junior All-American Michaela Antonellis added two goals. Senior Carly Andersen contributed a goal and assist, while freshmen Olivia Cameron and Sophie Schreck each netted their first collegiate goals in the win.

Senior Sara Freedman made one save in her 47:34 in the Stonehill goal, before giving way to freshman Abigail Campbell for the final 22:26 to complete the shutout in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Suzanne Clarke registered six saves in her 40:34 in the St. Thomas Aquinas cage, while senior Kaitlyn Gee played the final 29:26 and made two stops.

Smith scored the first three goals of the contest to put Stonehill in control less than 20-minutes into the game. She opened the scoring 4:55 into the contest off a penalty corner, working a give-and-go with freshman Charlotte Cloosterman for the goal. Smith doubled the Skyhawks lead at 10:41 and then added her third at 19:31 off a long carry on the counter-attack. Antonellis wrapped up the first half scoring with her first goal of the year at 28:23.

Cameron's first career goal came just 1:39 into the second half when she tipped in a drive from in front of the goalkeeper off a drive from the top of the arc by freshman Elisha Brinkman. Schreck's first collegiate goal less than a minute later came off a tip of a Smith drive at 37:10. Andersen continued the Stonehill push of four goals in the opening 13 minutes of the second half with her third of the season, when she pushed in a loose ball at the left post at 40:34. drove in a corner pass by sophomore Elaine Bachelder from the top of the arc. Smith capped the scoring in the 62nd minute off an Andersen corner pass for her fourth of the day and sixth of the season. The four goals match her career-high for the fourth time in her career and she enters Stonehill's next game just two points shy of reaching 200 career points, having totaled 83 goals and 32 assists for her career.

Stonehill (3-1, 0-0 NE10) is off for another week before opening Northeast-10 Conference play at Assumption College on Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, September 29, to host rival Bentley University at 1 p.m. St. Thomas Aquinas (2-6) hosts Manhattanville College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
