South Berwick, Maine, sophomore back earns national honors for first time

Longstreth/NFHCA Division II Weekly Honors

EASTON, Mass. (September 6, 2018) – Stonehill College sophomore back Elaine Bachelder has been named the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Defensive Player of the Week by the organization.

Bachelder earns the national Defensive Player of the Week accolades after leading a Stonehill defensive effort in Saturday's season-opening 2-1 win over No. 5 West Chester University. The Skyhawks held the Rams scoreless for 69-minutes before conceding a late consolation marker in the triumph, posting a pair of defensive saves in the process that kept the match scoreless at the time. Both defensive saves came in a scoreless first half off a West Chester corner before the Skyhawks were able to grab a two-goal lead later in the second half.

Bachelder anchors the Stonehill defensive backfield at center-back, after earning Synapse Sports Division II All-Rookie and NE10 All-Rookie Team status as a freshman. She led a Skyhawks backline that limited opponents to 2.20 goals per game, with six shutouts. Bachelder has started 20 of her 21 career games played, totaling three defensive saves and dishing out one assist. She currently leads the NE10 with her two defensive saves this season.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE10), ranked No. 6 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II preseason poll, returns to action on Sunday, when it hosts No. 2 East Stroudsburg University at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m.
