Andersen leads Skyhawks with two goals, Smith matches program's single-season assist record

COLCHESTER, Vt. (October 7, 2017) – Stonehill College ran its win streak to seven games with a 4-1 victory at Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Duffy Field this afternoon.

Junior forward Carly Andersen (Cheshire, Connecticut/Canterbury School) scored two goals for the fifth time this season (9th career), while senior Alexandria Sylvia (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) and junior All-American Kacie Smith (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) each contributed a goal and assist in the win for Stonehill. Smith, while seeing her run of seven-straight multi-goal games halted, has now scored in ten-straight games and with her 14th assist of the year, she matches the program's single-season record set by Kelly Latendresse '07 in 2005. Smith also finishes the game six points shy of Erika Kelly '16's single-season points record (78) and nine goals shy of Kelly's single-season goals mark (38).

Junior Sara Freedman (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) finished the game with six saves, including five in the first half, giving her 295 for her career as she looks to become just the fourth player in program history with 300-plus saves. Stonehill finished the game with a 16-15 edge in shots, while Saint Michael's posted an 8-5 advantage for penalty corners.

Sophomore Anna Hurley (Sandwich, Massachusetts/Sandwich) posted four saves in the Purple Knights cage, while classmate Claire Scherf (Bethlehem, Connecticut/Nonnewaug) recorded two defensive saves in support. Junior Katie Leonard (Carmel, New York/The Ursuline School) netted the lone goal for Saint Michael's.

Saint Michael's carried the early possession and shot attempts in the contest, drawing a Stonehill timeout ten minutes into the game after weathering four shots, two saved by Freedman, and two corners. The Skyhawks emerged from the break and Andersen scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to take control. She tipped in a pass from the top of the arc from Smith following a corner at 19:33, and then added her 12th goal of the season 1:22 after that, assisted by Sylvia, at 20:55.

Leonard cut Saint Michael's deficit in half with her first goal of the year less than ten minutes before halftime. Sylvia restored Stonehill's three-goal lead 1:16 into the second half in the right side of the cage off a rebound for her sixth goal of the year and 25th of her career. She moves within a goal of cracking the program's career top ten and within five points of the scoring top ten. Smith capped the scoring with her 29th goal of the year with 14:28 remaining in the contest.

Stonehill (9-3, 6-0 NE10) returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits Franklin Pierce University for an NE10 matchup at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks return to W.B. Mason Stadium on Wednesday, October 18, to host Merrimack College at 7 p.m. Saint Michael's (4-7, 1-5 NE10) visits American International College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
