Smith and Andersen lead Skyhawks to fourth straight win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 26, 2017) – Stonehill College jumped out to a five goal lead and didn't look back in posting its fourth straight win with a 7-2 decision at American International College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Ronald J. Abdow Field tonight.

Junior All-American Kacie Smith (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) posted her fifth straight multi-goal game to lead Stonehill, netting a hat trick for the third straight outing, as she also dished out an assist for seven points. She moves within three assists of the Skyhawks single-season record of 14 set by Kelly Latendresse, '07 in 2005 and her seven points give her 137 for her career to move into second place on the program's all-time list past Stonehill Athletic Hall of Famer Caitlin Gleason '08 (132).

Junior Carly Andersen (Cheshire, Connecticut/Canterbury School) added two goals and an assist for Stonehill, giving her at least a goal in four straight games and back-to-back multi-goal games. Senior Alexandria Sylvia (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) and freshman Taylor Ladue (Westminster, Massachusetts/Oakmont Regional) also chipped in with goals for the Skyhawks.

Junior Sara Freedman (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) finished with five saves in the Stonehill goal as the Skyhawks posted a 28-10 advantage for shots and held an 8-6 edge in penalty corners. Freedman did see her string of three straight shutouts come to an end as American International snapped a string of shutout minutes at 262:11. Senior Alex Torosian (Hopkinton, Massachusetts/Hopkinton) made nine saves in the AIC net.

Senior Katie Lombardozzi (Lancaster, Massachusetts/Nashoba Regional) and junior Devyn O'Connor (Marion, Massachusetts/Old Rochester Regional) each netted goals for AIC.

Smith struck twice within the opening seven minutes of the second half to run the Stonehill lead to 5-0. She scored just 4:48 into the half and then finished off her hat trick at 41:41 with her NCAA Division II-leading 21st goal of the year.

O'Connor broke up the shutout bid with her first goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Georgia Barnes (Canberra, Australia), at 56:02, but Stonehill answered just 2:44 after with Andersen's tenth goal of the season, assisted by Smith. Sylvia capped the Skyhawks scoring with her fourth of the season, assisted by senior Alexandra Gerew (Woodstock, Connecticut/Pomfret School), at 63:10. Lombardozzi's second of the season for AIC capped the scoring with 1:09 remaining.
