Skyhawks post fourth shutout win of the season

SHIRLEY, N.Y. (October 25, 2014) –  Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, completed a sweep of two games on Long Island this weekend with a 3-0 victory over Dowling College in non-conference field hockey action at Golden Lions Field today.

Stonehill got goals from three different players, including two late in the second half to break open a 1-0 halftime edge. The Skyhawks finished with a 16-2 advantage for shots, limiting Dowling to no shots on goal with senior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Maryland/North Harford) logging her third shutout of the season without making a save. Senior All-American Emily Sideris (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown), junior Elizabeth Thornton (Needham, Massachusetts/Needham) and freshman Alexandria Sylvia (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) all netted goals for the Skyhawks. Junior Lauren Giordano (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) and sophomore Sarah Morse (Westminster, Massachusetts/Oakmont Regional) dished out assists.

Junior Ariana Ovadia (East Meadow, New York/East Meadow) finished with 12 saves in the Dowling cage. Stonehill also held a 12-4 advantage for penalty corners to go with its shot differential.

Sideris put Stonehill in front just 5:17 into the contest when she tapped in a Giordano pass from the middle on a two on one with Ovadia for her fourth goal of the year. The Skyhawks were held scoreless until less than 11 minutes to play in regulation when Thornton's fifth goal of the season doubled their lead at 59:01 when she scored off a corner by Morse. Sylvia rounded out the scoring less than four minutes later by knocking in a loose ball during a scramble in front of goal for her eighth marker of the season at 62:55.

Stonehill (10-2, 4-1 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts 9th-ranked Saint Michael's College for a key Northeast-10 Conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 4 p.m. Dowling (2-12) visits Mercy College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
