Giordano Named NE-10 Player of the Week

Watertown, Massachusetts, junior forward earns honor for first time

EASTON, Mass. (September 9, 2014) – Stonehill College junior forward Lauren Giordano (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, the league office has announced.

Giordano earns the award for the first time in her career after scoring the game winning goal in both season-opening wins against two nationally-ranked opponents this past weekend. She finished the week with three goals for six points in the 2-0 week for Stonehill, netting her three goals on just three shots over the two games. Giordano scored the Skyhawks opening goal of the season late in the first half of Friday night's 2-0 non-conference triumph over No. 5 Merrimack College and then added two second half goals, including the deciding goal 2:15 into overtime of Sunday's wild 8-7 triumph over 8th-ranked East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University.

Giordano's opening three goals and six points have her ranked second among NE-10 leaders, behind only classmate Erika Kelly's (Watertown, Massachusetts/Watertown) four goals and nine points, through the first weekend of the season, while Giordano's two game-winning goals lead the league. She also ranks tenth nationally in Division II for scoring and ninth in goals scored.

Giordano, a synapsesports.com Division II All-Rookie and NE-10 All-Rookie team selection last year, has played 23 games over the last two seasons for Stonehill and totaled 13 goals and three assists for 29 points, including three game winning goals. She finished third on the team in 2013 with 23 points, while her ten goals tied for second for the Skyhawks to go with three assists. Giordano collected NE-10 Rookie of the Week honors once last season.

Stonehill (2-0, 0-0 NE-10), ranked 7th in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II preseason coaches' poll, is back in action on Saturday when it visits Saint Michael's College for a non-conference matchup at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks don't return home until Tuesday, September 30, to host Saint Anselm College for a non-conference clash at 7 p.m.
