Pioneers claim NE-10 regular season title, Skyhawks seeded third for NE-10 Tournament

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (November 2, 2013) – LIU Post, ranked fourth in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll and second in the NCAA II North Regional rankings, claimed the Northeast-10 Conference regular season title in its first season in the league with a 4-3 overtime victory over 3rd-ranked Stonehill College, ranked first in the region, in NE-10 field hockey action at Hickox Field this afternoon.

LIU Post (18-0, 10-0 NE-10) wins the NE-10 regular season crown in its first year in the league after moving from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and will be the top seed for the NE-10 Tournament set to get underway with first round action on Tuesday. The Pioneers have earned a first round bye and will host the winner of Tuesday's first round matchup between Bentley University and Adelphi University next Friday for a semifinal matchup.

Stonehill (16-2, 8-2 NE-10) will be seeded third in the NE-10 Tournament and will host either Saint Anselm College or Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday for a first round clash at 7 p.m. Saint Anselm (6-10, 4-5 NE-10) would clinch the sixth seed with a win at Assumption College tomorrow at 1 p.m., while a loss would seal the six seed for Southern Connecticut (5-13, 4-6 NE-10) by way of its head to head win over Saint Anselm this year.

Sophomore Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) led LIU Post this afternoon with two goals, while post grad Dani Crouse (Westville, South Africa) dished out two assists. Senior Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and freshman Lauren Adamusik (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) each chipped in goals for the Pioneers.

Freshman Meredith Stocklin (Mount Laurel, N.J./Paul VI) made six saves in the LIU Post cage as the Pioneers recorded a 22-15 advantage for shots, including 13-6 in the first half, and held a 17-10 edge in penalty corners. Junior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) posted a career-high 15 stops in the Stonehill goal, including nine in the first half.

Junior All-American Emily Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) scored a pair of first half goals for Stonehill, which sought to clinch a share of a third NE-10 regular season title with a win today and could have earned the top seed for the NE-10 Tournament with a win by two or more goals. Sophomore Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) chipped in with her program and NE-10 record 32nd goal of the year. Her program-record 65 points this season sits seventh in NE-10 history.

Sideris got Stonehill off to a great start with her first goal of the game off a pass from senior Kelly Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) on a break 7:34 into the contest. Dragon equalized just 56-seconds later when she knocked in her own rebound at 8:30 for her 27th goal of the year. She is now just a point shy of the NE-10 single-season scoring record of 76 points by University of Massachusetts Lowell's Sammy Macy in 2010.

Sideris put Stonehill back in front 11:56 into the game by knocking in a rebound off the post into an open goal for her sixth goal of the year. LIU Post was quick to level the score again with Adamusik's first career goal at 18:16. The Pioneers took their first lead with 5:15 left in the first half when Margiotta potted an unassisted goal into the lower left corner for her first of the afternoon.

Kelly equalized for Stonehill with 7:18 left in regulation when she took a pass from senior All-American Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) in a scramble in front of goal and slid in her 32nd goal. Kelly then nearly gave the Skyhawks the win on the first shot by either team in overtime, but Crouse stopped the shot in behind Stocklin.

Margiotta's 21st goal of the year gave LIU Post the victory after her penalty corner was passed back by Crouse for the winning goal 3:34 into overtime.
