Sideris nets deciding goal to give Skyhawks 13th-straight win
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 15, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked third in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, kept its winning streak alive with a 2-1 double-overtime triumph over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Ronald J. Abdow Field this afternoon.
Junior All-American Emily Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) scored her second game winning goal of the season to lift Stonehill to its program-record 13th win to start the year. Sophomore Lauren Giordano (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) also scored a goal for the Skyhawks, while senior All-American Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) dished an assist.
Junior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) preserved the win with four saves in the Stonehill cage. The Skyhawks finished with a 19-12 advantage for shots in the contest, with a 20-3 margin for penalty corners. Senior Kori Huffman (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) posted nine stops in the American International goal.
Junior Jenna Masionis (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) scored a goal for American International, with freshman Romane Wilmotte (Brussels, Belgium) collecting an assist.
Giordano gave Stonehill a lead just before halftime when she took a pass from Ingersoll and scored her sixth goal of the season at 29:08. Masionis equalized with her tenth goal of the year at 54:32 off a feed from Wilmotte. Stonehill had several chances down the stretch, but Huffman made a big save on sophomore Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass./Watertown), the leading scorer in Division II, with 100-seconds to play and shots by Ingersoll and senior Kelsey Davis (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) were just off the mark in the final minute.
Stonehill outshot American International 9-2 in the first 15-minute overtime period, but was unable to break through with a winner until Sideris pounced on a Kelly rebound and slid her second overtime winner past Huffman 3:35 into the second overtime off the Skyhawks 20th corner of the afternoon. Sideris also notched the deciding goal in Stonehill's 6-5 comeback win at then 9th-ranked East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University on September 8.
Stonehill (13-0, 6-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it returns to W.B. Mason Stadium to host Southern Connecticut State University at noon. American International (7-6, 2-3 NE-10) visits 9th-ranked Bentley University on Friday at 7 p.m.
