Kelly adds single-season scoring record after two more goals this afternoon

EASTON, Mass. (October 12, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, posted its first shutout of the season with a 3-0 decision over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Sophomore forward Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) added another program record to her season as she led Stonehill to the win with a pair of goals, giving her a school-record 49 points this season. Kelly, who has posted a program-record 24 goals and an assist, surpasses Claire Hourihan's, '10, previous record of 48 points set in 2008. Kelly also inches closer to the Northeast-10 single-season record of 30 goals and moves into fifth place on the Skyhawks career list with 32 career goals.

N.H./Londonderry) chipped in with an assist. Junior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) made five second half saves to keep Adelphi off the scoreboard for her second career shutout. The Skyhawks defensive backline of seniors Gina Sheehan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), Chelsea Emery (New Hampton, N.H./Tilton School) and Emily Coholan (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) held the Panthers to just six shots on goal and 12 shots overall in the shutout effort.

Sophomore Kelly Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J./Parsippany) finished with seven saves in the cage for Adelphi. Stonehill finished with a 15-12 edge in shots, but the Panthers held a 10-5 advantage for penalty corners, including 8-1 in the second half.

Stonehill struck for a pair of goals within a four minute span to gain control of the game. Kelly opened the scoring with a one timer from the left side on a pass from the center of the arc by Ingersoll off a penalty corner at 20:29. Thornton doubled the Skyhawks at 23:50 as her drive from the left side deflected off an Adelphi defender and into the right side of the goal for her second marker of the season.

Kelly capped the scoring with her NCAA Division II leading 24^th goal of the year at 48:40 with a lob over the defense on a rebound of an initial shot by junior All-American Emily Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) to surpass the Skyhawks single season scoring mark.

Stonehill (12-0, 5-0 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits American International College for a Northeast-10 matchup at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks are back here at W.B. Mason Stadium next Saturday to host Southern Connecticut State University at noon. Adelphi (6-6, 1-3 NE-10) travels to 5^th-ranked LIU Post on Thursday for an NE-10 matchup at 4 p.m.
