Kelly collects second Player of the Week award in three weeks
Genovese named Goalkeeper of the Week for second time in her career
EASTON, Mass. (September 24, 2013) – Two members of the nationally-ranked Stonehill College field hockey program have earned weekly honors from the Northeast-10 Conference the league office announced.
Sophomore forward Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) earned NE-10 Player of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks this fall, while junior Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) has collected NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the first time this season for their efforts in leading Stonehill to a 3-0 week.
Kelly, who was also named NE-10 Player of the Week on September 9, scored six of Stonehill's nine goals in a 3-0 week, including all three gamewinners. She netted her third-straight hat trick to open the season with all three Skyhawk goals in Tuesday's 3-1 win at NE-10 preseason favorites Merrimack College. Kelly followed that up with the go-ahead goal in the second half of Thursday's 3-1 win over 10th-ranked American International College in the Skyhawks home opener. She capped the week with two markers in Saturday's 3-1 victory at Southern Connecticut State University.
Kelly, who earned NE-10 Rookie of the Week accolades once as a freshman, leads Division II in scoring with her 26 points and goals with 13 in five games played for Stonehill. She has scored 13 of the Skyhawks 22 goals in six games (59-percent) and 13 of the 18 (72%) goals scored in her five games played. Kelly is already over halfway towards breaking the program's single-season record of 20 goals set by Claire Hourihan, '10, in 2008 and matched in 2009, currently ranking tied for fifth, and 22 points shy of Hourihan's single-season record of 48 set in 2008. Kelly leads the NE-10 with her four gamewinning goals as well.
Kelly has posted 21 goals and two assists for 44 points in 24 career games played early on in her second season for Stonehill. Kelly ranked third on the Skyhawks in scoring as a freshman as she finished with eight goals and two assists for 18 points in 19 games played (six starts), earning a spot on the NE-10 All-Rookie Team. She enters this week just one goal shy of cracking the program's career top ten list.
Genovese earns NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the second time in her career, having also collected the award as a freshman in October, 2011. She backboned Stonehill's defensive effort in a 3-0 week as she posted a 1.00 goals against average and .833 save percentage, while averaging five saves per game. Genovese made nine saves in Tuesday's 3-1 win at preseason NE-10 favorites Merrimack and then added one stop in Thursday's 3-1 victory over 10th-ranked American International in the Skyhawks home opener. She capped the week with five saves in Saturday's 3-1 win at Southern Connecticut State.
Genovese has played all 421:20 in the Stonehill cage over six games this season and has posted a 1.99 goals against average and .727 save percentage while averaging 5.3 saves per game. She ranked fifth among NE-10 leaders for goals against (9th nationally) and save percentage, while also ranking 13th in Division II for saves per game.
Genovese has played 2,104:48 over 34 games (28 starts) in the Stonehill cage for her career, posting a 2.30 goals against average and .689 save percentage while averaging 4.5 saves per game. She has earned NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll status all four semesters at Stonehill.
Stonehill (6-0, 1-0 NE-10), ranked fourth in last week's Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll and winners of its first six for the first time since a 7-0 start in 2007, is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for a non-conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks also host Saint Michael's College in a non-conference contest on Saturday, as part of Family Weekend at the College, at noon.
