Ford nets gamewinner ten minutes into second half to keep Skyhawks playoff hopes alive

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 16, 2012) – Stonehill College gave its postseason chances a big boost with a key 2-1 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Grappone Stadium tonight.

Senior Brittany Ford (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and freshman Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) netted goals for Stonehill as the Skyhawks posted a 10-3 advantage for shots and a 6-2 edge for penalty corners.

Sophomore Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) finished with one save to preserve the win for Stonehill, while sophomore Jessica Snow (Shrewsbury, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) finished with three stops for Saint Anselm.

Freshman Canada Stewart (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) scored the lone goal for Saint Anselm.

Stonehill struck early with Kelly netting her seventh goal of the season when she tipped in a pass from junior Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) 1:23 into the contest. Saint Anselm leveled the score just over ten minutes later with Stewart's sixth of the season off a feed from sophomore Bridget Davis (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) at 11:43.

Ford's eighth goal of the year provided the gamewinner, with an assist from junior Gina Sheehan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), 9:42 into the second half.

Stonehill (8-9, 5-5 NE-10) closes out the regular season on Saturday when it visits Saint Michael's College for an NE-10 matchup at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks can clinch a spot in next week's Northeast-10 Tournament with a win. Saint Anselm (6-11, 3-6 NE-10) closes out the regular season at Bentley University on Thursday at 7 p.m.
