Ingersoll nets winning goal 6:32 into overtime for Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (October 2, 2012) – Junior Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) scored the gamewinning goal 6:32 into overtime to lift Stonehill College to a 3-2 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.

Ingersoll worked a give and go with sophomore Emily Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) off Stonehill's second penalty corner of the overtime session before slotting a low shot into the right side of the cage for her team-leading tenth goal of the season. The Skyhawks finished with a dominating 36-8 advantage in shots for the contest, including 23-6 after halftime, and posted a 19-4 edge in corners.

Sideris dished out two assists for Stonehill, while senior Brittany Ford (Augusta, Maine/Cony) contributed a goal and assist. Ingersoll and senior Chelsea Fizell (Cotuit, Mass./The Berkshire School) each chipped in with goals for the Skyhawks. Sophomore Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) made four second half saves for Stonehill.

Sophomore Kori Huffman (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) kept American International alive with an incredible 18 saves in goal for the Yellow Jackets, including 11 in the second half. Senior Mackenzie Kewley (Rutland, Mass./Rutland) and freshman Cheyenne Carden (Branford, Conn./Branford) each netted goals for AIC.

Carden opened the scoring with her first career goal 7:55 into the contest as she took a pass from sophomore Courtney Williams (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and fired a shot that caromed over Genovese as she charged off her line.

Stonehill knotted the score before halftime when Fizell netted her fifth of the season with a drive from the upper left corner of the arc off a feed from Ford at 24:58. The Skyhawks looked to take charge in the second half when Ford scored her sixth of the year just 39-seconds in with a one-time shot on the left post off a cross from the right side by Sideris on the initial break down the field.

American International equalized less than five minutes later when Kewley tipped in a drive from the top of the arc by freshman Kaylin Harbin (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) for her second goal of the year at 40:01.

Stonehill had numerous chances to avoid overtime down the stretch, but was unable to capitalize, including a penalty stroke by Ingersoll in the 59th minute that was pushed away by Huffman. The stroke came at the end of a four shot flurry from the Skyhawks after a timeout. Huffman also made three big saves in the final five minutes of regulation and then Genovese came up big on a partial breakaway in the final minute by Carden.

Stonehill (6-6, 2-2 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it visits Assumption College for a key Northeast-10 Conference clash at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks next home game is next Wednesday, October 10, when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University at 6 p.m. American International (2-10, 2-2 NE-10) hosts Bentley University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
