McAllister goal with 6:27 to play halts Stonehill comeback

EASTON, Mass. (September 15, 2012) – Bellarmine University held off a furious Stonehill College rally over the final 20 minutes to claim a 4-3 victory in non-conference field hockey action on National Field Hockey Day at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Junior Rachael McAllister (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) scored the deciding goal when she followed her own corner pass to the left post and went undetected before one-timing a pass from the top of the arc by senior Moriah Facktor (Louisville, Ky./Manual) for the game-winning goal with 6:27 to play in regulation. The deciding goal came just moments after Stonehill had a goal off a penalty corner disallowed after they had rallied from a three goal deficit to knot the score.

Four different players scored goals for Bellarmine, who got two assists from Facktor. Juniors Brittany Raque (Louisville, Ky./Assumption), Carrie Walker (Louisville, Ky./Male) and freshman Alexis Van Wallaghen (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) also netted goals for the Knights, who built up a 3-0 lead just over seven minutes into the second half.

Sophomore Paris Bryant (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Collegiate) made four saves in 46:59 of scoreless play in the goal for Bellarmine. Freshman Alex Moro (Saint Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) finished with five stops over the final 23:01. Stonehill posted a 20-11 advantage for shots in the contest and held a 13-11 edge in penalty corners.

Three different Stonehill players netted unassisted goals in the second half to equalize the match with less than ten minutes to play. Junior Kelsey Davis (Gardner, Mass./Gardner), sophomore Jennifer Foley (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and freshman Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) all got on the scoresheet for the Skyhawks.

Senior Kaitlyn Curtis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) finished with two saves in the first half for Stonehill, while sophomore Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) added two second half saves.

Bellarmine opened the scoring at 19:21 when Walker scored her first goal of the season with a drive from the top of the arc off a corner pass from Facktor. VanWalleghen doubled the Knights lead at 26:58 when she one-timed a low cross from the right side at the left post for her third marker of the season.

Bellarmine extended its lead to three goals 7:29 into the second half as Raque tipped in a drive from the right side by sophomore Meghan Williams (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) for her first goal of the year.

Stonehill wouldn't go quietly as Foley sparked the rally with her second goal of the year at 50:23 when she knocked in a loose ball off a rebound. Davis struck two and a half minutes later with her second of the year by knocking in a rebound off a corner at 52:52. Kelly capped the rally when she pounced on a loose ball in front of the cage and knocked it into an empty net for her first collegiate goal at 60:48.

Stonehill appeared to take the lead just moments later, but junior Devin Ingersoll's (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) blast from the top of the arc off a penalty corner was disallowed. Bellarmine came right down the field and forced a corner of its own where McAllister netted the deciding goal.

Stonehill (3-3, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule against No. 4-ranked University of Massachusetts Lowell here at W.B. Mason Stadium at 6 p.m. Bellarmine (3-3) visits Saint Anselm College tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
