Skyhawks to play in annual All-Star Game at Bloomsburg on Saturday

EASTON, Mass. (November 10, 2011) – Stonehill College seniors Laura Menke (Greenland, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) and Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) will both participate in the 2011 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II North/South Senior All-Star Game on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Stonehill seniors will play for the North Squad and the game will hosted by Bloomsburg (Pa.) University at Sports Stadium in conjunction with the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships this weekend.

Nelson, a consensus All-American her junior season for Stonehill, earned All-Northeast-10 honors for the second-straight year this fall with her first team selection. She led the Skyhawks with 12 goals (8th NE-10), including two game winners, and seven assists (8th) for 31 points (7th) in her final collegiate season. She ranks 22nd nationally in Division II for points per game (1.55), 28th for goals per game and 25th for assists. Nelson finished with seven goals and an assist for 15 points in ten Conference matches.

Nelson, a second team All-America selection by both the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and womensfieldhockey.com last fall, became the third player in program history to surpass 100 career points this season and finished her career ranked third in program history with 103 points and 45 goals to go with 13 assists in 82 career games played. Nelson was an NE-10 All-Rookie team selection as a freshman in 2008 and has netted 12 game winning goals over her career.

Nelson has been recognized for her work in the classroom as well as the field of play by being voted a Capital One Academic All-District I at large selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America following her junior season and is a three time NFHCA Division II Academic Squad member.

Menke split time for Stonehill between forward and defense in her senior season. She finished with two goals and two assists for six points in 13 games played and was part of a defense that which posted a 2.53 goals against average with three shutouts, allowing 13.4 shots and 5.8 corners per game.

Menke has been named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad every year and is also a member of the Northeast-10 Commissioner's and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls. She has played 59 games over her collegiate career and totaled seven goals and six assists for 20 points. Menke posted a career-best five goals and two assists her junior season, netting a gamewinning goal as well.

Stonehill, making its 14th-straight postseason appearances this fall, completed its season with a 10-10 record overall, including a 4-6 mark in Northeast-10 play.
