McCarthy's five point night lifts River Hawks to Conference win

LOWELL, Mass. (September 20, 2011) – The University of Massachusetts Lowell, ranked fourth in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, overcame an early deficit with three straight goals and held off a second half Stonehill College rally for a 4-2 victory in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Cushing Field tonight.

Sophomore Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) led UMass Lowell with two goals and an assist for a five point night, while senior Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane Regional) dished two assists. The River Hawks also got goals from junior Emily Painten (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and freshman Bianca Jones (Watertown, Mass./Watertown).

Sophomore Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led Stonehill with a goal and assist, while freshman Jennifer Foley (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) also contributed a goal.

Sophomore Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass./Harwich) preserved the win in goal for UMass Lowell with two saves. Freshman Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) kept Stonehill in the game with six saves. UMass Lowell posted a 17-8 advantage in shots for the contest, including an 11-2 margin in the first half alone, and edged the Skyhawks in penalty corners, 11-10.


Freshman Jennifer Foley netted her team-best fourth goal of the season.

Stonehill struck first just 1:39 into the contest when Ingersoll drove in a shot from the top right corner of the arc, assisted by junior Jessica Laurendeau (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough), off a corner for her second goal of the season.

UMass Lowell scored the next three goals to take control of the match, including two goals 12 seconds apart to carry a 2-1 lead into halftime. McCarthy scored her first of the night, assisted by Hansbury, off a corner at 28:28. Jones netted her first collegiate goal just 12 seconds later when she tapped in a cross by sophomore Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) at 28:40.

UML extended its lead to two goals 7:12 into the second half with McCarthy's second goal of the night (fifth of the season), off a feed from Hansbury, on a corner at 42:12. Foley drew Stonehill back within a goal just over nine minutes later when she tipped in a drive from the top of the arc by Ingersoll for her team-leading fourth goal of the year at 51:39.

However, the River Hawks added an insurance goal to ice the match with 4:20 left in regulation as McCarthy set up Painten for her second marker of the season at 65:40.

Stonehill (3-5, 0-2 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits Saint Michael's College for a non-conference matchup at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks return home the following day on Sunday to host Lindenwood University for a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. UMass Lowell (6-1, 1-0 NE-10) hosts Lindenwood on Friday at 3 p.m.
