Falcons score once in each half, Powell posts six-save shutout

EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2011) – Bentley University scored a goal in each half to pick up a 2-0 victory over Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference field hockey opener for both at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Junior goaltender Julie Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomeraug) posted her first shutout of the season with a six-save performance, including five in the second half, to lead Bentley to the Conference win. Stonehill finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots for the contest, including a 13-4 margin in the second half, and registered 13 corners to two for the Falcons (10-1 second half). Freshman Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) made two saves in the cage for the Skyhawks.

Bentley scored once in each half as senior Stephanie Sideris (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and freshman Gina Lirange (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) each netted their first goals of the season. Senior Tori Bergantino (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) chipped in with an assist for the Falcons.

Bentley opened the scoring 8:31 into the contest as Lirange scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from the right side by Bergantino at the left post. The Falcons added the insurance goal 5:43 into the second half when Sideris was able to muscle a loose ball over the goal line during a scramble in front of the Stonehill cage.

Stonehill (3-4, 0-1 NE-10) is right back in action in Tuesday night for a Northeast-10 Conference clash at No. 3-ranked UMass Lowell at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Sunday, September 25, to host Lindenwood University for a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. Bentley (2-4, 1-0 NE-10) hosts Assumption College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
