Bergquist's posts shutout behind 19-save performance

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (September 10, 2011) – Merrimack College posted a 4-0 victory over Stonehill College, ranked fourth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II preseason poll, in non-conference field hockey action at Warrior Field this afternoon.

Merrimack junior goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) recorded an incredible 19 saves to post her second-straight shutout. The Warriors scored twice in the opening 5:09 on their way to a 3-0 lead at halftime. Stonehill posted a 28-13 advantage in shots for the match, and piled up 21 penalty corners to four for the hosts.

Junior April Daugherty (Wakefield, R.I./Lincoln) scored both Merrimack goals in the opening five minutes, while classmate Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H./Merrimack Valley) dished assists on the Warriors final two goals. Seniors Sarah Salatto (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Victoria DeLacey (Charlton, Mass./Shepard Hill Regional) each added goals for Merrimack.

Freshman Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) made two saves over the final 48:59 in goal for Stonehill. She relieved junior Kaitlyn Curtis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough), who didn't make a stop in the opening 21:01.

Daugherty netted a pair of unassisted goals in the opening 5:09 to give Merrimack all the goals it would need. She knocked in a rebound in front of the cage to open the scoring at 2:15 and then scored on a breakaway at 5:09.

Salatto one-timed a cross from Otis on the left side at 21:01 to chase Curtis and give the Warriors a three goal lead at halftime. Otis then set up DeLacey for the lone goal of the second half and close out the scoring on the afternoon at 49:18. 

Stonehill (2-3, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Adelphi University for a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. Merrimack (3-1, 0-0 NE-10) visits Saint Michael's College on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
