#4 Stonehill Holds Off Saint Anselm in OT, 3-2

Foley's first collegiate goal is gamewinner, stems Hawks second half rally

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 8, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II preseason poll, responded to a furious second half rally by Saint Anselm College to claim a 3-2 overtime triumph in non-conference field hockey action at Grappone Stadium this afternoon.

Freshman Jennifer Foley's (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) first career goal 1:54 into overtime lifted Stonehill to its second-straight win in the span of three days. Senior All-American Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) dished two assists, including Foley's winner, and classmate Laura Menke (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) added a goal and assist. Junior Chelsea Fizell (Cotuit, Mass./The Berkshire School) chipped in with her first goal of the season as well.

Junior Kristina Katsikis (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) played a role in both second half goals for Saint Anselm to force overtime, with a goal and assist. Sophomore Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) also netted a goal for the Hawks.

Junior Kaitlyn Curtis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) made four saves in goal for Stonehill, while freshman Jessica Snow (Shrewsbury, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) stopped nine shots for Saint Anselm. The Skyhawks posted a 22-11 advantage in shots for the contest, and held a 17-6 edge in penalty corners.

Menke opened the scoring 14:02 into the match when she knocked in a rebound, assisted by Nelson, for her first goal of the season. Menke turned provider on the Skyhawks second goal at 24:42 when her centering pass set up Fizell for her first marker of the year (second career).

Saint Anselm scored twice in a 26-second span in the second half to force overtime. Katsikis scored her second of the year, assisted by freshman Molly O'Brien (Emerald Isle, N.C./Croatan), at 41:53. Katsikis then set up Sears' second of the season at 42:19 that knotted the score.

Nelson set up Foley's winner at 71:54 to send Stonehill home with the win. Nelson carried the ball down the right side and then sent a long centering pass to Foley for the deciding goal.

Stonehill (2-2, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it visits Merrimack College for a non-conference clash at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Wednesday, September 14, to host Adelphi University at 4 p.m. Saint Anselm (0-3, 0-0 NE-10) visits American International College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
