#6 Stonehill Tops Assumption in Regular Season Finale, 3-1

Foley posts goal and assist to lead Skyhawks to third-straight win

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 10, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked sixth in this week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, closed out the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Multi-Sport Stadium this evening.

Senior back Courtney Foley (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield Memorial) led Stonehill to its third-straight win and 11th over its last 12 games with a goal and assist on the afternoon. Junior Laura Menke (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) and freshman Kelsey Davis (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) also collected goals for the Skyhawks. Seniors Lindsey Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) and Lauren Gifford (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) each chipped in with assists.

Senior Brittany Boyle (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) scored the lone goal for Assumption, while classmate Danielle Luongo (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin) posted 15 saves in the Greyhounds goal.

Senior Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) finished with one save in goal for Stonehill, who finished with a 21-3 advantage in shots for the game and posted a 25-0 margin for penalty corners (16-0 in the second half).

Stonehill scored the lone goal of the first half as Foley netted her sixth of the year at 26:35 off a feed from Gifford from a Pinkham corner. The Skyhawks put just five shots on goal in the opening half and Luongo stopped four of them.

Stonehill doubled its lead 2:56 into the second half when Menke scored her fourth of the year off another corner. Assumption closed back within one just over seven minutes later with Boyle's third of the year, assisted by freshman Bethany Rocha (Lakeville, Mass./Bishop Stang), at 44:59.

Stonehill regained its two goal cushion with Davis' second of the year, assisted by Foley, off a corner at 55:30.

Stonehill (14-5, 9-1 NE-10) has earned a first round bye for the upcoming Northeast-10 Championships and will open the postseason with a semifinal round matchup, hosted by top-seeded University of Massachusetts Lowell, on Friday, November 19, at a time to be announced. The Skyhawks will face the winner of a Tuesday opening round game between the No. 3 and No. 6 seeds. The complete tournament schedule will be released at the conclusion of the regular season this weekend. Assumption sees its season come to a close with a 0-18 record overall, 0-10 in NE-10 play.
