Arpe Steps Down As Field Hockey Coach

Easton, Mass. - Pam Arpe, the architect of the Stonehill Field Hockey program, has decided to step down as head coach the College's Director of Athletics, Paula Sullivan announced on Friday.

"No one person has done more for Stonehill Field Hockey than Pam Arpe," said Sullivan. "She has created a winning tradition and that has made Stonehill a major player on the national scene."

In eight seasons, Arpe brought the Skyhawks to regional and national prominence, going 112-54 (.675 winning percentage) and advancing to the NCAA Tournament on two separate occasions.

She guided Stonehill to a Northeast-10 Tournament Championship in 2005, as the Skyhawks advanced to the NCAA final four and posted the best season in program history (19-3). During that magical season, Stonehill won a school-record 15 straight contests and saw its national ranking reach No. 4 in the country.

The following season, Stonehill won its first-ever Northeast-10 regular season title, going 17-5 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament first round.

In what turned out to be her final season, Arpe's charges recorded the third most wins in school history (15), opened the season on a seven-game winning streak and reached No. 2 in the national polls, the program's highest ever.

During her tenure, Arpe produced seven NFHCA All-Americans, including two who were featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces In The Crowd, and 18 All-Northeast-10 selections.

Arpe's teams also excelled academically, with 34 student-athletes being named to the NFHCA National All-Academic team in the last four seasons and 15 others earning Conference All-Academic honors in the last three years.

Arpe, who also serves as Assistant Director of Athletics, will remain in that role and as head coach of the Stonehill women's tennis program.
