MANCHESTER, N.H.-- Junior Caitlin Gleason (New Boston, N.H.) set school single-game records with four goals and nine total points in leading Stonehill to a 7-0 Northeast-10 Conference field hockey victory over Saint Anselm in the league opener for both squads Wednesday afternoon at South Athletic Field.
Gleason, who starred locally at Goffstown (N.H.) High School, broke the mark of three goals held by three individuals in her homecoming performance for the visiting Skyhawks (2-0, 1-0 Northeast-10), who have now won 14 straight regular season matches and 12 straight conference contests dating back to last September. Gleason staked Stonehill to a 2-0 edge with a pair of goals in the first 7:53 of play, and markers off the sticks of junior Kara Brady (Eastham, Mass.) and sophomore Kerri Sullivan (Goffstown, N.H.) extended the Skyhawk edge to 4-0 at the break.
Gleason netted her tying and record setting goals in the 42nd and 56th minutes of play, both of which were unassisted, to give the visitors a 6-0 lead, and sophomore Laura Nimon's unassisted tally that came just 31 seconds after Gleason's fourth goal closed out the scoring. Sullivan, a high school teammate of Gleason's, finished with a goal and an assist in her homecoming as well for Stonehill, as junior Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) picked up the win without having to make a save in net for the visitors.
Freshman Riley Haddock (Falmouth, Maine) made 10 saves in her collegiate debut in goal for the host Hawks (0-1, 0-1 Northeast-10), who were playing their season opening match. Stonehill outshot Saint Anselm by a 29-1 margin and held a 16-3 edge in penalty corners.
Stonehill travels to Millersville, Pa. on Sunday afternoon to take on Millersville in a non-league match at 11:00 a.m., while Saint Anselm heads to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Assumption in a Northeast-10 contest at 1:00 p.m.
