THE JOURNEY BEGINS: Stonehill makes its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships this afternoon as the Skyhawks, seeded second in the North Region, host the third-seeded Bentley Falcons in North Region national quarterfinal round action. Stonehill enters the NCAA championship with a school-record 18 victories, a 14-match winning streak and its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference tournament title, as the Skyhawks took the league crown last Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime triumph over UMass Lowell at Cushing Field in Lowell, Mass. Sophomore Aly Boulis (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) provided the heroics for Stonehill by netting the game-winner 13:08 into the extra session on a feed from junior All-America Kelly Latendresse (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee), who also assisted on sophomore Caitlin Gleasons (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown) first half tally. Sophomore Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass./Tantasqua) picked up her 18th victory of the season in goal for the Skyhawks with a nine-save effort, including six stops in the first half alone, as the lone River Hawk marker came on a penalty stroke, the only goal allowed in 153-plus minutes of action by Stonehill during the Northeast-10 championships.
LAST MEETING: Stonehill and Bentley last met a week ago (October 30th) in the Northeast-10 Conference semi-finals at Cushing Field in Lowell, Mass., and the Skyhawks posted a 1-0 victory over the Falcons. Caitlin Gleason provided the margin of victory for Stonehill on an assist from Kelly Latendresse for the lone goal of the day 6:30 into the second half, and Dani Ryder made that stand up with a four-save effort in goal to collect her ninth shutout of the season as the Skyhawks outshot Bentley by a 10-7 margin for the contest.

THE REGULAR SEASON SERIES: Stonehill swept both match-ups with Bentley during the 2005 regular season for the first time in school history, as the Skyhawks posted a 2-0 triumph over the Falcons back on September 8th at W.B. Mason Stadium before notching a 2-1 victory on October 6th in Waltham. Senior co-captain Julie Michalos (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) netted a goal and an assist in the September win for Stonehill, while sophomores Aly Boulis (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln) and Colleen McLaughlin (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) scored the two goals in the October Skyhawk triumph.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Todays match marks the 18th meeting between Stonehill and Bentley, and the Falcons hold a 13-4 edge over the Skyhawks in the all-time series between the two schools. In addition to the three victories this season, Stonehills other win in the series came with a 1-0 overtime triumph during the 2003 campaign. Todays match is the sixth post-season meeting between Stonehill and Bentley, and the Falcons have won four of the previous five post-season match-ups, including victories in the 1998 and 2004 Northeast-10 semi-finals and triumphs in the 1999 and 2000 conference quarterfinal round prior to last Saturdays contest.
STONEHILL IN POST-SEASON PLAY: Todays match will be Stonehills 14th in post-season play since the programs inception in 1996, and the Skyhawks have notched a 4-9 mark in their previous 13 post-season contests. Stonehills first-ever post-season win came with a 2-1 overtime triumph over Franklin Pierce in the 2001 Northeast-10 quarterfinals, and the Skyhawks collected a 1-0 win over LIU-C.W. Post in the 2002 ECAC semi-finals before falling to East Stroudsburg in overtime in the championship match. Last weekends victories over Bentley and UMass Lowell in the Northeast-10 playoff account for the other two triumphs.
THE SKYHAWKS: Gleason leads Stonehill in scoring with 13 goals and six assists for 32 points, while Latendresse follows with nine goals and 13 assists for 31 points. Boulis is next with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points, while Michalos has notched seven goals and five assists for 19 points. Ryder has recorded a school-record 18 wins in goal for Stonehill with a league-leading 0.82 goals against average, as she has made 69 saves for an .812 saves percentage to go with nine shutouts.
THE FALCONS: Junior Mary Rogers leads Bentley, the 2004 NCAA runner-up, in scoring with 23 goals and 10 assists for 56 points, while fellow junior Lindsey Harrington follows with 12 goals and nine assists for 33 points. Junior Kristen Allen has netted nine goals and six assists for 24 points, while sophomore Cristina Sergi has four goals and 11 assists for 19 points. Senior Kristin Johnson has posted a 15-5 mark in goal for the Falcons with a 1.23 goals against average, having made 83 saves for a .769 saves percentage to go with seven shutouts.
HEAD COACH PAM ARPE: Pam Arpe is in her sixth season as Head Field Hockey Coach at Stonehill College. A 1972 graduate of Principia (Ill.), Arpe ranks as the winningest coach in school history and has guided the the Skyhawks to an overall mark of 79-42 (.653) during her tenure, picking up her 75th career victory on October 18th in a 7-3 triumph over Bryant and leading Stonehill to its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference tournament title last weekend. Arpe, who is assisted by her daughter Amanda (William Smith 03), is 4-8 during her career against Bentley.
HEAD COACH KELLY McGOWAN: Kelly McGowan is in her 11th season as Head Field Hockey Coach at Bentley College. A 1994 Northeastern graduate, McGowan has compiled an overall mark of 190-50-1 (.790) during her tenure and guided the Falcons to the 2001 NCAA Division II national crown. McGowan, who sports a career mark of 193-55-1 (.777) that includes one season at Regis, is assisted by Ben Saraydarian and Brooke Dusoe. McGowan is 13-4 during her career against Stonehill.
POLL POSITION: Stonehill climbed to the fourth position in the final STX/NFHCA Division II national poll on Tuesday, tying the highest mark that the Skyhawks have been ranked nationally. Stonehill has been ranked in the Division II poll in 40 of the last 46 ranking periods dating back to 2001. Bentley enters todays match ranked seventh in the final STX/NFHCA Division II poll.
THE DEFENSE NEVER RESTS: Stonehill led the Northeast-10 with the fewest amount of goals allowed during the regular season. The Skyhawks enter the NCAA championships with more victories (18) than goals allowed (16). Stonehill also netted the most goals in the conference this year with a school-record 66 tallies in 20 matches.
SKYHAWK TALK: Stonehills October 6th win at Bentley snapped the Falcons 17-match regular season winning streak that dated back to September 2004. The Skyhawks have won four of the last seven match-ups with Bentley dating back to 2003 Four Stonehill players have been honored as Northeast-10 Player of the Week in four of the last five weeks: Kelly Latendresse, Caitlin Gleason, Colleen McLaughlin and Aly Boulis, who was named as the Most Valuable Player of the Northeast-10 ChampionshipsDani Ryder has been named as the Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Week on five occasions during the season, including this week when she was honored for her efforts during the conference championships. She has recorded 31 career victories, 18 via shutout Field Hockey became the 10th Stonehill program to earn a Northeast-10 post-season crown, joining mens & womens cross country, mens & womens soccer, mens & womens basketball, baseball, womens lacrosse and womens tennis in that distinctionMichalos and Latendresse each earned spots on the 2005 Northeast-10 Field Hockey Academic All-Conference squad, as Michalos was honored for a second straight season with the selectionFreshman Kerri Sullivan (Goffstown, N.H.) becomes the third Skyhawk to earn Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year accolades, joining Erica Marois (2001) and Cindy Pultz (2000) in copping the honor.
WHOS NEXT: The winner of todays Stonehill-Bentley North Region national quarterfinal advances to square off with North Region top-seed UMass Lowell (18-3) on Friday, November 11th in national semi-final round play of the 2005 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships, as that contest will be played at the Robb Sports Complex on the campus of Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pa. beginning at 2:00 p.m. EST. The 2005 NCAA Division II Field Hockey national championship match will be played on Sunday, November 13th at Shippensburgs Robb Sports Complex at 1:00 p.m. EST.
