Three members of the Stonehill College field hockey team have been named to the 2005 Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II All-America team for their efforts during the best season in school history this fall.
Junior midfielder Kelly Latendresse (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) was named as a first team Dartfish/NFHCA All-America selection for her play in 2005, as she becomes the first two-time All-America honoree in school history. An all-Northeast-10 Conference selection both on the field and in the classroom, Latendresse tied for the Skyhawk scoring lead with 32 points, as she led Head Coach Pam Arpe's squad with 14 assists while adding nine goals. Latendresse notched three of her team-high assists in post-season play, including a pair of helpers in Stonehill's 2-1 overtime triumph over eventual NCAA national champion UMass Lowell in the Northeast-10 tournament championship contest on October 30th.
Senior co-captains Lindsay Breen (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and Julie Michalos (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) were named as second team Dartfish/NFHCA All-America performers for their efforts this fall, as they join Latendresse and former Stonehill standout Libby Hanna '04 as the only All-America honorees in the program's 10-year history. Breen, a first-team all-Northeast-10 selection, helped anchor a Skyhawk defensive unit that posted more victories (19) than goals allowed (18) on the season, as Stonehill held opponents to one or fewer goals in 19 of 22 matches this fall, including 10 shutouts. Breen added a pair of defensive saves on the year and finished her career ranked behind only Hanna on the Skyhawk career list with 13.
Michalos, a first-team all-Northeast-10 selection on the field and a two-time Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference honoree in the classroom, finished the season with seven goals and five assists for 19 points and ranks fourth on Stonehill's career scoring list, as over the course of her career she finished among the top team scoring leaders in each of her four campaigns. Michalos tied for second on this year's squad with three game-winning goals.
Stonehill completed its best season ever in 2005 with an overall mark of 19-3, as the Skyhawks captured their first-ever Northeast-10 tournament title and advanced to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships. Arpe's crew bested rival Bentley four times during the course of the year, including a 1-0 decision in the NCAA North Region national quarterfinals, before dropping a 2-1 decision to eventual national champion UMass Lowell in the NCAA Division II National Semi-Finals last Friday afternoon in Shippensburg, Pa. Stonehill set school records for wins (19), consecutive wins (15), goals scored (68) and goals allowed (18).
