SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-- Sophomore Caitlin Gleason’s (New Boston, N.H.) goal 2:22 into the second overtime lifted sixth-ranked Stonehill to a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference field hockey victory over American International Thursday afternoon at Yellow Jackets Field.
Gleason converted passes from junior All-America Kelly Latendresse (Sidney, Maine) and sophomore Aly Boulis (Lincoln, R.I.) off a penalty corner for her team-leading 10th goal of the season that enabled the visiting Skyhawks (15-2, 13-2 Northeast-10) to extend their school-record winning streak to 11 straight and clinch a bye into the semi-final round of next weekend’s Northeast-10 playoffs, as Stonehill can finish no lower that second in the final conference standings. Freshman Stephanie Laskey’s (Greenfield, Mass.) first collegiate goal in the 51st minute of play gave the host Yellow Jackets (1-15, 1-14 Northeast-10) a 1-0 advantage with just under 19 minutes remaining in regulation, but senior Julie Michalos (Norwood, Mass.) evened matters with 8:30 to play in regulation on a feed from freshman Kara Brady (Eastham, Mass.) for her seventh tally of the season, setting up Gleason’s heroics in the second extra session.
Sophomore Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) picked up her 15th win of the season in goal for Stonehill with a five-save effort on the afternoon, while sophomore Cindy Armand (Danvers, Mass.) made 19 stops in net for American International as the Skyhawks outshot the Yellow Jackets by a 25-6 margin and held a 29-2 edge in penalty corners for the contest. The win also enabled Stonehill to match its highest victory total in school history, as the 2001 edition of the Skyhawks also won 15 contests.
Stonehill closes out regular season play on Saturday morning when the Skyhawks travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption in a Northeast-10 outing that begins at 10:30 a.m., while American International closes out its Northeast-10 slate on Saturday morning by heading to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant beginning at 10:00 a.m.
