John Gomes, one of the top receivers in program history, is in his sixth year of his second stint as assistant coach with his alma mater. The record-breaking receiver is in his second season as special teams coordinator, while serving as position coach for the SKyhawks wide receivers. Gomes has also been the team's academic coordinator, overseeing a team which earned the NE10's Team Academic Excellence Award on two occasions.

Gomes returns to Stonehill after joining the coaching staff at College of Idaho, an NAIA program located in Caldwell, Idaho, in February, after spending the 2016 season at NCAA Division I FCS University of California, Davis. Gomes served as wide receivers coach during the spring season at College of Idaho, gaining recruiting contacts in California and Washington. While at UC Davis, he served as defensive quality control coach and director of player personnel, on head coach Ron Gould's coaching staff, working directly with linebackers coach Bryant Haines. Gomes helped re-write the Aggies defensive playbook, drew and organized game plans and practice scripts and ran the opponent scout team. Gomes assisted in coaches' evaluations of recruits, coordination of official visits and was a liaison to prospective student-athletes during campus visits.

Gomes was the wide receivers coach and academic coordinator on former head coach Robert Talley's coaching staff here at Stonehill during the 2016 season. He helped the Skyhawks post a 7-4 record, highlighted by a 27-10 win at No. 11 Bloomsburg (Pa.) University in week one. He coached second team All-NE10 receiver Gordon McLeod, '16 and assisted in all facets of offensive game and practice planning. He also recruited in Southeastern and Central Massachusetts and Rhode Island. As academic coordinator, he helped guide the team to a 3.01 team grade point average in the spring 2016 semester.

Gomes first joined his alma mater after two seasons as assistant head football coach at Saint John Paul II High School in his hometown of Hyannis, Massachusetts. He served as the Lions co-offensive coordinator, while being positional coach for the wide receivers and defensive backs.

Gomes, an All-Northeast-10 Conference performer at Stonehill as a senior, was a four-year letterwinner and three year starter for the Skyhawks. He currently ranks second in program history for career receptions (173) and receiving yards (2,442) after graduating with the program records in those categories. Gomes also still ranks fifth on the program's career touchdown reception list (18) and third for all-purpose yards (3,391). He boasts the two of the top four reception games in program history with 14 receptions against American International his junior year and 13 catches against Southern Connecticut State as a senior, while his 197 receiving yards against Pace in 2012 is the second-highest single-game total in program history.

Gomes earned his Bachleor of Arts degree from Stonehill in criminology in 2013.
