Second Half Push Sends New Haven Past Football, 31-9

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2019) – The University of New Haven scored 31-straight points, outscoring Stonehill College 24-2 in the second half, to claim a 31-9 triumph in a non-conference football matchup between Northeast-10 Conference opponents on Family Weekend at Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Sophomore Shamar Logan paced a New Haven offense that rushed for 223 yards by carrying the ball 22 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon. The Chargers gained 185 of its 279 total yards in the second half, while holding Stonehill to just 33 yards over the final two quarters of play.

Junior D'won Walker posted a team-high six tackles (all solo) for the New Haven defense, while sophomore Ryan Hodgins posted six stops (two solo), including 2.0 for a loss of eight yards. Junior Shawn Tafe intercepted two passes to go with five tackles (three solo), and classmate Martin Worgan registered five tackles (one solo), a forced fumble and 1.0 tackles for a loss of three.

Junior Zach Mauro added 72 yards on 15 rush attempts in support of Logan, with a touchdown. Postgrad Ju'an Williams finished with 120 all-purpose yards on the afternoon, catching two passes for 43 yards and a score, returning three punts for 28 yards and adding a 49-yard kickoff return.

Junior Sam Athy recorded a game-high nine tackles (five solo) for a Stonehill defense that held New Haven in check for 30 minutes. Classmate Nate Bresson added seven stops (four solo), including 2.0 for a loss of two yards and a pass breakup. The two tackles for loss give him 24.0 for his career, moving within three of cracking the program's career top ten in just 22 career games. Sophomore Dominick Spano finished with five tackles (four solo) and a fumble recovery.

Junior Anton Stoneking rushed for Stonehill's lone touchdown for his first career score. Sophomore DeAaron Lawrence finished with four receptions for 44 yards, while adding 21 yards on two kick returns, for 65 all-purpose.

New Haven scored 31-straight points after Stoneking rushed up the middle from nine yards out midway through the first quarter. The touchdown came two plays after New Haven gave the Skyhawks great field position after a muffed snap on special teams on fourth and ten from their own 28. New Haven took advantage of a Stonehill fumble to level the score in the opening quarter. Logan scored on a 47-yard rush up the middle after the Skyhawks fumbled at midfield on second and one.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, but New Haven would add ten points on its first two possessions of the second half. Junior Michael Stalenyj capped the first drive of the half with a 35-yard field goal after Williams gave the Chargers great field position with a 49-yard kickoff return. Logan set up New Haven's second touchdown on its next possession with a 42-yard rush on first down, while Mauro capped the three-play drive with an 11-yard touchdown.

Williams capped a nine-play, 77-yard drive over 5:50 between the third and fourth quarters, hauling in a 36-yard touchdown pass from junior Nick Robins. The Chargers ran their string of points to 31-straight on their next possession, with Logan scoring his second touchdown of the day from seven yards out with 11:42 remaining in the fourth. Stonehill capped the scoring for the afternoon, when a New Haven snap on fourth and 16 sailed over the punter's head and through the end zone with 5:40 remaining.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE10) returns to action next Saturday, September 21, when it visits Saint Anselm College to open NE10 play with the Battle for the Ol' Bronze Hawk in Manchester, New Hampshire, at 6 p.m. The Skyhawks return home after a bye week to host American International College on Saturday, October 5, at 1 p.m. New Haven (1-1, 0-0 NE10) hosts American International next Saturday at 1 p.m.
