Mount Joy, Pa., quarterback is first Stonehill student-athlete honored in seven-year history of award

NEWTON, Mass. (May 21, 2018) – Stonehill College quarterback Matt Foltz (Mount Joy, Pennsylvania/Donegal/The Hill School) was presented with the Jack Daly Award for Academics, Citizenship and Football at the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation's 43rd Annual Scholar-Athlete Award Dinner, hosted by the Boston/Newton Marriott on Sunday night.
Foltz received the award just hours after graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in economics earlier in the day. The Daly Award is presented annually to a college football student-athlete in the Chapter footprint based on academics, football performance and community service. Foltz is the first Stonehill student-athlete to receive the honors in the award's seven-year existence and the third Northeast-10 Conference quarterback to earn the award. He was honored at the Grinold Chapter's signature event along with Boston Herald staff writer Dan Ventura, with the Ed Schluntz Contribution to Amateur Football Award, Don Chiofaro, President of The Chiofaro Company, with the Ron Burton Distinguished American Award, as well as 33 High School Scholar-Athlete Award recipients.
Foltz, who received Stonehill's Fr. William Gartland, CSC, Male Senior Student-Athlete Award this spring, graduated with a 3.73 cumulative grade point average, being named to the Dean's List every semester, along with earning NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll status every semester. He has been named to the Omicron Delta Epsilon honor society, was a National Football Foundation & Hall of Fame William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist and a three-time NE10 Academic All-Conference selection. Foltz was the football program's first two-time captain since the 1999 and 2000 seasons, when he was elected by his teammates prior to his junior year.
Foltz served as a Teaching Assistant in the Economics Department at Stonehill and completed a summer internship as a tutor at Harvard University's summer school academic tutoring program for micro and macroeconomics courses. He has volunteered at Trinity Catholic Academy in Brockton, assisting with both class and extra-curricular activities, donated his time to My Brother's Keeper in Easton, delivering food and furniture to those in need and was a volunteer assistant swimming coach at the Mount Joy Swim Club back in his hometown.

On the field, Foltz is the first quarterback in program history to pass for over 2,000 yards three seasons, including a school-record 2,468 yards as a senior, and the first to throw for over 7,000 career yards, finishing with a school-record 7,310 yards – good for 15th all-time in NE10 history. He posted a school-record 666 completions, finishing with a program-record 61.8% completion percentage, while his 60 career touchdowns rank second all-time and ranks 12th in NE10 history. Additionally, Foltz finished seventh in program history with 14 career rushing touchdowns and is one of two all-time to post a pair of 20-plus touchdown passing seasons. He owns the top two passing games in program history and the only two 400-yard games, passing for a record 421 yards and program-record matching six touchdowns in comeback win at LIU Post his sophomore year.
Foltz is the first Stonehill football player to earn the New England Football Writers Division II/III Weekly Gold Helmet Award on two occasions, doing do first after his record performance at LIU Post in 2015, and then a second time after leading the Skyhawks to a 45-34 victory at Saint Anselm College in the "Battle for the Ol' Bronze Hawk" in 2016, with a school-record 448 yards of total offense. He completed 21-of-36 passes for a season-high 330 yards and five touchdowns, while adding seven carries for a career-best 118 yards on the ground. Foltz collected NE10 Offensive Player of the Week honors four times over his career, including once as a senior, was the first Stonehill football player to receive an invitation to the University of Massachusetts Pro Day and participated in the National Bowl in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Dream Bowl in Salem, Virginia.
Stonehill capped its 2017 season with a 6-4 record overall, marking its third finish above .500 over the last five years, including a 5-4 mark in the NE10, with its fourth winning season in Conference play over the last six years. The Skyhawks will open their 2018 season when they host Fairmont State University on Friday, August 31, at 6 p.m.
