Record-breaking nights for Foltz and Jamiel lead Skyhawks to victory

EASTON, Mass. (October 15, 2016) – Stonehill College rallied from a ten point deficit after three quarters of play to claim a 21-17 triumph over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference football action, which was streamed live on Watch ESPN as part of the NCAA Division II Football Showcase, at Timothy J. Coughlin '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.

Stonehill was led by the record-breaking offensive combination of junior quarterback Matt Foltz (Mount Joy, Pennsylvania/The Hill School) and freshman wide receiver Andrew Jamiel (West Yarmouth, Massachusetts/Dennis-Yarmouth) as the Skyhawks recorded 472 yards of total offense. Foltz completed a program-record 37 passes on 45 attempts for a season-high 405 yards and two touchdowns, overcoming three interceptions and adding another 17 yards on six carries on the ground for 423 yards of total offense. Jamiel caught a school-record 18 of those passes for a season-high 169 yards and two scores, including the game-winning touchdown with 1:26 remaining to cap the comeback.

Foltz's 37 completions surpass the previous program mark of 34 by Logan Meyer '14 against Southern Connecticut State University in 2012. Foltz also surpasses 400 passing yards for the second time in his career, setting a new W.B. Mason Stadium record in the process. Jamiel, the NCAA Division II leader in receptions, posted his fifth double-figure reception game of the season, breaking his own previous single-game mark of 16 catches at Southern Connecticut State in week two. He also moved up to second place on the program's single-season list with a Division II-best 73 catches after his W.B. Mason Stadium record total tonight, which finished one shy of the NE-10 single-game record as well as five shy of the NCAA Division II single-game mark.

Foltz also connected with sophomore tight end Kaleb Lutton (Middletown, Connecticut/Xavier) seven times for a season-high 125 yards, marking his second career 100-yard receiving game. Junior Kevin Dick (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial) added a career-high nine receptions for a career-best 96 yards. Freshman running back Brian Kearns, Jr. (North Arlington, New Jersey/Saint Joseph Regional) chipped in with his first career rushing touchdown after recovering a blocked punt in the end zone two weeks ago against Merrimack College.

Senior linebacker Ryan Doherty (Methuen, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) led a Stonehill defense which didn't allow a touchdown after the opening minutes of the second quarter with his eighth career double-figure tackle performance with a game-high 11 stops (six solo), including 0.5 for a loss of three yards, and three pass breakups. Junior Nick Bona (Peabody, Massachusetts/Bishop Fenwick) added eight tackles (four solo) and a breakup, while sophomore Nicolau Coury (Lowell, Massachusetts/Lowell) contributed four solo stops, including 1.0 for a loss of a yard, a forced fumble and interception that sealed the victory in the closing seconds.

New Haven finished with 348 total yards, including 267 passing and 81 on the ground, but Stonehill limited the Chargers to 142 yards in the second half, including just 61 through the air.

Senior quarterback Ajee Patterson (Neptune, New Jersey/Neptune) completed 20-of-33 passes for 267 yards and a touchdown for New Haven, with two interceptions. Seven of those passes went to grad student Ty Headen (Newark, New Jersey/American History) for 142 yards and a score. Senior running back Andre Anderson (New Haven, Connecticut/Hillhouse) ran the ball 17 times for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Leo Lorenzo (Miami, Florida/South Miami) led the New Haven defense with ten tackles (seven solo), including 1.0 for a loss of two yards and a pass breakup. Senior linebacker Tyler Condit (Caldwell, New Jersey/Caldwell) added nine stops (two solo), while junior Mark Clements (Mays Landing, New Jersey/Worcester Academy) intercepted two passes and chipped in two tackles.

Foltz engineered the fourth fourth quarter comeback of his career by leading Stonehill to a pair of touchdowns in the final frame after trailing 17-7 through three quarters. The Skyhawks closed the gap to 17-14 with Kearns, Jr.'s three-yard touchdown run 4:09 into the final quarter just two plays after Foltz connected with Lutton for a 56-yard pass and catch on second and nine from the Stonehill 37.

New Haven drove to the Stonehill 14 on its next drive, but opted to go for six on fourth and four before seeing Patterson's pass to Headen fall incomplete. Foltz, who completed 9-of-10 passes for 142 yards in the fourth quarter alone, led the Skyhawks on a 12-play, 86-yard drive which culminated with a ten-yard touchdown toss to Jamiel in the back corner of the end zone with 1:26 remaining. The Chargers would move the ball to the Stonehill 36, but Coury picked off Patterson at the 26 to seal the Skyhawks victory.

Stonehill scored on its opening possession as Foltz and Jamiel connected for a 25-yard touchdown five minutes into the game. New Haven would produce points on its next three possessions to open a 17-7 lead after a 40-yard field goal from junior Danny Stock (North Massapequa, New York/Plainedge) 5:17 into the second quarter.

Patterson and Headen connected for a 14-yard touchdown pass on New Haven's next drive after Stonehill's opening score. The Chargers took advantage of Foltz's first interception of the day with a ten play, 64-yard drive capped by a 14-yard scoring jaunt from Anderson 1:08 into the second quarter.

Stonehill (3-4, 3-3 NE-10) is back in action next Saturday when it visits rival Bentley University for an NE-10 matchup at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return to W.B. Mason Stadium the following Saturday, October 29, to host nationally-ranked Assumption College for Senior Day at 1 p.m. New Haven (4-3, 4-2 NE-10) hosts Assumption next Saturday at 1 p.m.
