Manchester, N.H., junior is among 36 small college nominees for excellence on the field and in the community

EASTON, Mass. (July 30, 2014) – Stonehill College junior placekicker Steve Grzywacz (Manchester, New Hampshire/Manchester Central) is among 36 student-athletes named to the 2014 Fred Mitchell Award Watch List for excellence on the football field and in the community.
Grzywacz is one of 12 kickers from Division II and two from the Northeast-10 Conference named to the watch list, which consists of 36 student-athletes from 750 eligible programs from Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, Division III, the NAIA and junior colleges. He is also the first Stonehill placekicker named to the watch list in the six years of the Fred Mitchell Award's existence. He received a Fred Mitchell monthly award for October 2012.
Grzywacz, named a preseason All-Northeast-10 selection by Beyond Sports Network, is coming off a 2013 season in which he earned second team All-Conference honors after setting a program record with 37 PATs made on a program best 41 attempts. He ranked second on the team and 12th in the NE-10 with 61 points which is the eighth highest single-season total in program history and ranked fourth in the Conference among kickers. Grzywacz converted 8-of-12 field goal attempts, including a career-long 45-yarder in a 26-14 victory at Merrimack College last November, ranking third in the league for field goals made.
Grzywacz volunteers for a mentoring program with the Brockton High School chapter of "Let's Get Ready," a program that offers counseling and free SAT prep to students from low income families. He served as a match coach which involved working with students on math skills and tips on how to take the math portion of the SAT exam and also worked with sessions called "college choice" to advise students on various aspects of college preparation, exploring and researching potential schools, reviewing the college application process as well as helping students register for the SAT. Grzywacz volunteers for the Special Olympics program at Stonehill and the Easton Elementary School Recess Day program.
Grzywacz enters the 2014 season ranked second in program history with 19 made field goals over his career, just one shy of the record, and 29 field goal attempts, while his 119 career points is a point shy of cracking the program's top ten. He set a program record for field goals made with 11 his freshman season, while his eight field goals in 2013 ranks second on the program's single-season list and his 62 career PATs ranks third in program history. Grzywacz has been named to the Northeast-10's Commissioner's Honor Roll three semesters and Stonehill's Athletic Director's Honor Roll once. He was also selected to the NE-10's All-Rookie team following his freshman season.
Stonehill posted its best season in nearly 20 seasons in 2013 with an 8-3 record overall, including an 8-1 mark in the Northeast-10 to earn a share of its first NE-10 regular season championship. The Skyhawks open their 2014 season when they host 2013 NCAA Tournament participants Bloomsburg (Pa.) University at W.B. Mason Stadium on Saturday, September 6, at 1 p.m.
