Harrington Named NE-10 Defensive Player of the Week

Rockland, Mass., junior linebacker collects award for first time after career day

EASTON, Mass. (September 10, 2013) – Stonehill College junior linebacker Brian Harrington (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for football by the league office.

Harrington made the most of his first career start in Stonehill's season-opener at Bloomsburg (Pa.) University, ranked 16th in the D2football.com Division II preseason poll and 18th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) preseason poll, on Saturday. He posted a career-high 16 tackles against the Huskies, including a career-best eight solo.

 Harrington's tackle total on Saturday was tops in the Northeast-10 and ranks third nationally in Division II following the first weekend of the season. He also leads the NE-10 and ranks 24th nationally for solo tackles. Seeing time primarily on special teams over his first two seasons, Harrington has totaled 41 tackles (28 solo) in 21 career games played. He was named the Skyhawks Special Teams Player of the Year by the coaching staff following his sophomore season and has earned NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll status all four semesters and named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll two semesters.

Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) opens its 2013 Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Saturday when it hosts Saint Anselm College for the Battle for the Ol' Bronze Hawk at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium at 6 p.m. The game also kicks off the College's Inauguration Week activities for Rev. John Denning, CSC, who took over as president of the College on July 1 and will be formally inaugurated as the tenth president in Stonehill history on Friday, September 20.
