Manchester, N.H., native collects first weekly award after helping Skyhawks to big win over Southern Connecticut State
EASTON, Mass. (September 10, 2012) – Stonehill College freshman placekicker Stephen Grzywacz (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Rookie of the Week by the league office today.
Grzywacz helped steer Stonehill to a big 13-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University in the NE-10 opener for both at W.B. Mason Stadium. He converted the first two field goals of his collegiate career and also added a successful extra point try on the afternoon. His 37-yard field goal broke the scoreless tie with just three seconds remaining in the first half. He added a 25-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter that extended the Skyhawks lead to 13-0.
Grzywacz ranks second on the team in scoring after the first two weeks of the season with 11 points, converting 2-of-5 field goal attempts and making all five extra point attempts. He ranks second in the NE-10 with his two field goals, while ranking third in extra point and combined kicker scoring, while rankling 11th in overall scoring.
It marks the second straight week a Stonehill freshman has collected NE-10 Rookie of the Week honors as classmate Gordon McLeod (Weymouth, Mass./BC High) earned the award last week. Saturday's win over Southern Connecticut State was the Skyhawks first in program history, having dropped the first 15 decisions in the series.
Grzywacz was a four year letterwinner at Manchester Central High School where he finished his career with 104 points, including 49 as a senior. He received the Joe Yukica Scholar-Athlete Award his senior year and played in the first ever New Hampshire East-West All-Star Game.
Stonehill (1-1, 1-0 NE-10) looks to build off Saturday's victory as it heads to Manchester, N.H., for the annual "Battle for the Ol' Bronze Hawk" at Saint Anselm College on Friday at 7 p.m. It will mark the first ever "Battle" contested under the lights as Grappone Stadium will host its first ever night football game. The Skyhawks return home the following Saturday, September 22, to host Assumption College for an NE-10 matchup at 6 p.m.
