Skyhawks collect NE-10 Special Teams and Rookie of the Week accolades
Anderson also earns national honor

EASTON, Mass. (September 4, 2012) – Stonehill College senior kick returner and cornerback Kevin Anderson (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) and freshman wide receiver Gordon McLeod (Weymouth, Mass./BC High) have both collected weekly football honors for their efforts in the Skyhawks season-opener against No. 21/25 Bloomsburg University on Friday night.

Anderson has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week as well as Beyond Sports College Network's Division II Kick Returner of the Week, while McLeod was named the NE-10 Rookie of the Week. The awards are the first for each Skyhawk.

Anderson racked up a career-high 214 yards on six kickoff returns, including a 92 yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff of the game against Bloomsburg. He averaged 35.67 yards per return, adding returns of 17, 13, 22, 11 and 59 yards. The 59 yard return in the third quarter set up the Skyhawks third touchdown of the game. Anderson also contributed on defense with seven tackles (five solo) and a pass breakup from the cornerback position.

Anderson's kickoff return average is the eighth-best in Division II after the first week of the season, and second among returners with four or more returns. He leads the NE-10 in kick return average and is one of three return men in DII to score a touchdown in week one. It marks the 11th kickoff return for a touchdown by a Stonehill player over the last five seasons after All-American and current assistant coach Stephan Neville, '12, set a Division II record with ten over his four year career. Anderson ranks 14th in the NE-10 for tackles, 12th for solo stops and fourth in pass breakups.

Anderson has been a four year starter at defensive back for Stonehill with 32 career games played. He has totaled 153 tackles (91 solo), including 2.0 for a loss of three yards, five interceptions, 25 pass breakups and three forced fumbles. Anderson ranks second in program history for career pass breakups and he has also returned 11 kickoffs over his career for 323 yards (29.36 yds/ret).

McLeod earns his first weekly honor after an outstanding collegiate debut against Bloomsburg in which he caught five passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. He caught third quarter touchdowns of 32 and 31 yards as the Skyhawks were able to draw within ten points after trailing by 24 at the half. McLeod was part of a Stonehill receiving corps that helped junior quarterback Logan Meyer (Ventura, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) post a school-record 370 passing yards – the highest ever by a Stonehill team and second-highest ever at W.B. Mason Stadium.

McLeod was a three year letterwinner at Boston College High School, earning All-Catholic Conference honors as a junior and senior. The ESPNBoston.com All-State performer was part of an Eagles team that went 10-3 in 2011 and captured a Super Bowl.

Stonehill (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) will open its NE-10 schedule on Saturday when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m.
