Brockton, Mass., native and member of football team lost battle with leukemia

Calling hours will be held Friday, June 24, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 900 Main Street, Brockton, Mass., from 4:00-8:00 p.m., with a time of remembrance at 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 25, at 11:00 a.m., at First Evangelical Lutheran Church.  

EASTON, Mass. (June 20, 2011) – The Stonehill College community is saddened by the passing of Henry Thevenin, '14, a rising sophomore at the College. Thevenin passed away early Tuesday morning due to complications from a two-month battle with leukemia.

"The entire Stonehill Skyhawk community is saddened by the loss of Henry Thevenin," said Brendan Sullivan, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the College. "In his short time at Stonehill, he made a tremendous impression on his teammates, friends, coaches, and faculty. He was a young man with a bright future, and we offer our sincerest condolences to his family at this time."

Thevenin, a communication major at Stonehill, appeared in seven games for the football team, starting the last six, as freshman in 2010. He totaled 18 tackles, eight solo, with a pass breakup for the Skyhawks during their 5-5 season last fall.

"I would like to start by saying my deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Henry's family," said Robert Talley, head football coach at Stonehill. "Henry was just starting to touch his true potential and was already becoming a big part of what we are going to do here with regards to the football program at Stonehill.

"I really think that his true character as a person came out during the time he was sick this spring," continued Talley. "Henry maintained his confidence, never showing what might have been going on inside of him and didn't want anyone to feel bad about what he was going through. Everyone liked being around him and he made everyone feel good about themselves in his presence. All of us associated with the football program are overcome by his loss and will miss him."

Thevenin is a 2009 graduate of Brockton High School, where he was a Brockton Enterprise All-Scholastic honoree, before prepping one year at Suffield Academy in Connecticut. He was an All-New England performer in helping lead the Tigers to a 9-0 record and New England Prep Super Bowl Championship prior to enrolling at Stonehill.

Thevenin is survived by his aunt and uncle, Marie and Jean Thevenin of Brockton, an older sister, Jenny Vilme, and younger brother, Estimae.
