EASTON, Mass.-- Sophomore Craig Toulouse (Whitefield, Maine) rushed for 86 yards and one touchdown as Southern Connecticut used a pair of second half scores to post a 14-0 Northeast-10 Conference football victory over Stonehill Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium.

The two teams combined for 98 rushing attempts in a game played in a driving rain and heavy wind and locked up in a scoreless duel at the break before the visiting Owls (6-3, 6-2 Northeast-10) got on the board midway through the third stanza. Sophomore quarterback Steve Armstrong (Nutley, N.J.), the Northeast-10's highest rater passer coming into the day, completed just one attempt on the afternoon that ended up being a key play, as his 25-yard hook-up with sophomore Ty Marshall (Ellenwood, Ga.) on a 4th-and-3 situation gave Southern Connecticut a first-and-goal set-up at the one-yard line, and Armstrong's plunge provided the visitors with the only points they would need. The Owls added an insurance score with 9:30 remaining in the contest, taking advantage of a dropped punt snap and a penalty on fourth down when Toulouse rumbled in from four yards out for a 12-0 lead, and Armstrong hit junior Rob Felder (Jersey City, N.J.) on a two-point conversion to account for the final score.

Junior Brandon Toles (Washington, Md.) rushed for 116 yards on 32 carries for his ninth straight 100-yard performance on the ground for Southern Connecticut, which rushed for 190 of its 215 yards of total offense on the afternoon. Sophomore Jeffery Payne (West Haven, Conn.) rushed for 45 yards on the day for the host Skyhawks (1-8, 1-7 Northeast-10), who also received 37 rushing yards from senior Cliff Mason II (Santa Ana, Calif.). Sophomore quarterback Jon Kaloyanides (Cranston, R.I.) completed three of the seven passes he threw for 21 yards, with all three receptions hauled in by senior Paul Rosie (Arlington, Mass.).

Freshman Michael Campbell (Newington, Conn.) paced Southern Connecticut defensively with seven total tackles (six solo), while sophomore George Whetstone (Westwood, Mass.) amassed 10 total tackles (seven solo) in the setback for Stonehill, including three for losses of eight yards. Juniors Chris Regan (Hanson, Mass.) and Mike DeBye (Burlington, Mass.) recorded 10 and nine total tackles, respectively, for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill closes out its 2006 slate next Saturday afternoon when the Skyhawks head to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International in a Northeast-10 outing that begins at Noon, while Southern Connecticut hosts Saint Anselm in its Northeast-10 finale next Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. beginning at 1:00 p.m.
