SMITHFIELD, R.I.-- Junior Lorenzo Perry (Providence, R.I.) rushed for a school-record 313 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Bryant overcame a 12-0 third quarter deficit to post a 24-12 Northeast-10 Conference football victory over Stonehill Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.
Perry accounted for all but 15 of the host Bulldogs (4-2, 4-2 Northeast-10) rushing yards for the contest, as his 17-yard touchdown run late in the third stanza enabled Bryant to cut its deficit in half at 12-6. Sophomore Kevin Anderson (Plainville, Conn.) then capped an 11-play, 85-yard drive with a seven yard touchdown to tie the score at 12-12 midway through the final quarter, and sophomore quarterback Charles Granatell’s (Franklin Park, N.J.) five-yard scamper with 2:53 remaining gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 18-12. Bryant closed out the scoring with 29 seconds remaining on Perry’s second score of the day from three yards out that was set up on an interception by sophomore James Lewis (New Haven, Conn.) deep in Stonehill territory.
The game was scoreless until the final minute-plus of the first half, as after senior Mike Plichta (Milford, Mass.) blocked his second punt in a week for the visiting Skyhawks (3-3, 3-2 Northeast-10), freshman quarterback Cruz Parsons (Signal Hill, Calif.) connected with Plichta on a one-yard touchdown pass to give Stonehill a 6-0 edge at the break. The Skyhawks then capitalized on Granatell’s third interception of the day in the third quarter when sophomore Chris Regan (Hanson, Mass.) ran a pick back 18 yards to the Bryant 27, and Parsons then found freshman Wes Dauer (Plymouth, N.H.) on a 26-yard hookup down to the Bulldog 1-yard line, setting up his second touchdown of the day to Plichta for a 12-0 Stonehill lead. Plichta has hauled in seven touchdown receptions in his last two games alone, while Parsons has thrown for nine scoring passes in his last three contests, his first three as a collegiate starter.
Granatell finished the day with 196 passing yards on a 12-for-32 effort, as Bryant amassed 524 yards of total offense for the day on 88 plays compared to 142 yards of total offense for Stonehill on 49 plays. Senior Shane Cheltenham (Lynn, Mass.) and junior Justin Kix (Shoreham, N.Y.) combined for seven receptions for 112 yards for the Bulldogs, who held the ball for nearly 36 minutes of play. Senior Greg Daniel (Providence, R.I.) paced the hosts defensively with seven total tackles, as Bryant recorded three sacks to go with a pair of interceptions on the afternoon in recording their sixth win in seven series meetings between the two teams.
Parsons finished the day completing 12-of-22 passes for 93 yards to go with his two touchdowns for Stonehill, as freshman Jon Nunley-Kilborn (Dartmouth, Mass.) hauled in five receptions for 48 yards. Junior Vincent Delaney (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Skyhawks defensively with a career-high 20 tackles (11 solo), the fourth highest single-game total in school history, and he added a pair of interceptions for 36 yards to go with a pass break-up. Regan added 10 total tackles (eight solo) to go with his interception for the visitors, as Stonehill notched a pair of sacks and five pass break-ups on defense.
Stonehill hosts rival Bentley in a Northeast-10 outing next Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Bryant heads to Manchester, N.H. to take on Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 match-up that kicks-off at 1:00 p.m.
