Baseball’s Late Comeback Falls Short Against Bentley, 11-7

Downey tallies his sixth game this season with more than one RBI

WALTHAM, Massachusetts (April 30, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team fought back in the eighth inning against Northeast-10 Conference foe Bentley University with six runs, but the Falcons kept the lead for their third win over the Skyhawks this season, 11-7, on Tuesday afternoon on DeFelice Field.

The Skyhawks are now 19-25 overall and 10-14 in NE10 Conference play, while the Falcons improve to 18-20 and 15-9 in Conference play.

Five Falcons recorded more than one hit in the game, including Mike Samko who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, as he drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the first.  Bentley put up two more runs for a 3-0 advantage on a Brandon Grover RBI and one of two doubles from Luke Figueira. Figueira was another Falcon to notch more than one hit, swinging 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI.

Stonehill saw their first base runners in the top of the second, but they didn't see their first hits of the game until the top of the fourth, as Bentley continued to put more runs on the board. In the bottom of the second, the Falcons saw two more runs across home plate on two hits and two errors, while three runs were added to the score in the bottom of the third on five hits and one error for an 8-0 lead.

The Skyhawks were able to get a run across in the top of the fourth as Patrick Downey singled through the left side with runners on first and second with two outs, cutting the deficit to seven, 8-1. Stonehill was able to keep Bentley from scoring for four-straight innings, allowing only two hits in that time.


Wilde went 2-for-3 with one run scored, one RBI, and two walks

The Skyhawks found their groove in the top of the eighth as they came within one run, 8-7, with six runs on four hits and an error. Stonehill saw the bases loaded for the first time all game as Aidan Wilde who went 2-for-3 with one run, a RBI, and two walks, walked in the first run of the game. Rob Duarte then drove William Kelleher on a single to right center, 8-3, as Downey connected for his fifth double of the season driving in two runs, 8-5. Stonehill squeezed on two more runs on an error and a sacrifice bunt for a six-run rally, 8-7.

After four-straight scoreless innings, the Falcons came back and put three more runs on the board on four hits, putting their lead to four, 11-7, in the bottom of the eighth. Stonehill saw their eighth hit in the top of the ninth, but Bentley kept the Skyhawks off the bases as they held on for their third win over Stonehill.

Stonehill will wrap up its season hosting Saint Anselm College for a three-game series starting on Thursday, May 2 with a first pitch at 3:30 p.m. and a doubleheader on Friday, May 3 for a noon and 3:00 p.m. twin bill on Lou Gorman Field.
