EASTON, Massachusetts (April 14, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team scored two runs late in the game for a one-run deficit, but No. 4 Southern New Hampshire University fended off the Skyhawks in the ninth to hold on for a 6-5 victory in Northeast-10 Conference divisional play on Lou Gorman Field on Sunday.

The Skyhawks are now 16-19 overall and 7-8 in NE10 Conference play, while the Penmen improve to 27-8 overall and 13-3 in Conference play. Prior to the game, Stonehill recognized its six seniors.

For Stonehill, Harrison Sabo went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Patrick Downey swung 1-for-2 with two RBI and two walks. Thomas Quinn went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Noah Lucier recorded a RBI swinging 1-for-3.

The Penmen saw the first hit of the game in the top of the second inning and was able to combine five hits and two errors for three runs, 3-0. With two outs and runners on first and third, Joshua Goldstein advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and Marcus Chavez put the first run on the board from the error. Sam Henrie followed the run with a RBI double to right center bringing home Goldstein for a 2-0 advantage. Alex Kennedy drilled the ball to center field and advanced to second on an error as Henrie crossed home for the third run, 3-0. Stonehill got out of the inning as Michael White struck out one of his five batters.

Downey went 1-for-2 with two RBI

White allowed one hit in the next four innings, as Stonehill tied the game with their own three runs in the bottom of the sixth. A two-out rally in the frame saw the bases loaded with back-to-back singles and an error, as Quinn poked a single through the middle scoring Aidan Wilde and Sabo. Downey recorded his only hit of the day with a drove out to center field for the tying run, 3-3.

Southern N.H. recorded three more hits and saw two more errors in the top of the eighth to double their score, 6-3. But, the Skyhawks fought back with a RBI walk from Downey in the bottom of the frame and a sacrifice fly from Lucier to cut the deficit to one, 6-5. Both sides were retired three-straight in the ninth as the Penmen took two of the three-game series from the Skyhawks.

Stonehill takes on Bentley University for the second game of the three-game series on Tuesday, April 16 with a first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Waltham, Massachusetts on Robert DeFelice Baseball Field. Join the Skyhawks on Wednesday, April 24 as Stonehill hosts Assumption College for the final game of the three-game series with a first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Massachusetts.
