Baseball Wins Fourth-Straight with 3-2 Victory over Assumption

Downey tallies second-career sacrifice fly for third-straight Conference win


Young threw 7.0 innings striking out a career high 12 batters 

WORCESTER, Massachusetts (March 28, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team (12-11, 3-0 NE10) won its fourth-straight game of the season and third-straight Northeast-10 Conference victory in a 10-inning 3-2 win against Assumption College (11-9, 1-3 NE10) at Rocheleau Field on Thursday afternoon.

For the Skyhawks, Matt Donlan was the only hitter to tally a multi-hit game swinging 2-for-4 with one RBI. Patrick Downey went 1-for-3 with one RBI and the game-winning sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning, while Rob Duarte also tallied a sacrifice fly as he went 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. The pitching duo of Michael Young and Michael White combined for 16 strikeouts, as Young registered a career-high 12 strikeouts in the 7.0 innings pitched and White threw 3.0 innings for his third win of the season.

The Greyhounds' Jared Brescia led the game swinging 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, as Derek Adamson was the only other to total multiple hits, connecting for 2-for-5 with one run scored and a double. R.J.Libby launched his second homerun of the season in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and send it into extra innings. On the mound, Brendan Desautels and Patrick Harrington split the 10 innings striking out 17 in the battle.

Stonehill saw back-to-back runners in the top of the first reach base, but the Skyhawks were retired stranding the two on base. They continued fighting in the top of the second as Shane O'Halloran walked to lead off the inning and with two outs advanced on a wild pitch to third. Donlan then drove him in for the first lead of the game, 1-0.

The Skyhawks extended their lead to two in the top of the third, 2-0, as Duarte flew out to left field scoring Harrison Sabo from third after he reached on a single. After stranding one runner in each of the second and third innings, Assumption finally connected to cut the deficit to one, 2-1, with Kevin Quinlivan's single to center field, scoring Adamson from second.  

Libby launched his third-career homerun in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and send it into extra innings, 2-2, as neither team was able to get a run across in the previous three innings.

In the top of the 10th with one out and runners on second and third, Downey flew out to center field bringing home Aidan Wilde for the game-winning run. After Brescia led off the bottom of the frame with a single, White retired the side with two ground outs and his fourth strikeout of the game.

Stonehill contends Merrimack College for their three-game series this weekend with the doubleheader on Saturday, March 30 with first pitch at noon at Harrington Athletics Village in Brighton, Massachusetts and the single game on Sunday, March 31 with a first pitch at noon at St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers, Massachusetts.
